Walton prepares for championships at raceway
Welcome back to the many
readers. We hope everyone at The
Citizen enjoyed their break and are
ready to get back to work. Plenty of
happenings around the area to catch
up with including our veryunpredictable weather. Anotherweek of wet, damp weather to put
off the wheat harvest. The heavy
rains of the last weekend in July
were followed by a four-inch rain on
the first day of August. The long
weekend started a little damp on
Friday evening and Saturday was
sunny and a little cool. Sunday was a
nice day and finally a great day
on Monday. The farmers were hard
at it harvesting the wheat, baling
straw and even raking hay.
Farming: You have to “make hay
while the sun shines”. The weather
has hopefully turned around and we
hope August will become warm anddry. The corn needs heat so let’shope!
Walton will be a noisy place this
week with the running of the
Canadian Motocross Grand National
Championships at the Walton
Raceway. The amateur portion runs
from Wednesday to Saturday and
then the pros ride for the National
Championships on Sunday.The
village of Walton and the businesses
throughout the area benefit from the
influx of over 10,000 folks from all
across Canada and the U.S. The
many area groups who provide
services for fundraising dollars have
a busy week ahead. We hope forgood weather.Returning from a driving holiday
to the west coast are Graeme, Helen
and Michael Craig. They were
“killing two birds with one stone”
by heading west to drive Helen’s
sister Mary back to Vancouver and
also stopped to attend the
International Plowing Match at
Olds, Alberta. They report that the
scenery is very colourful with the
ripening crops. In one day of travel,
they had breakfast in Brandon,
Manitoba, then lunch in Moose Jaw,
Saskatchewan and finally supper,
just north of Calgary. A 1,200-
kilometre drive. They enjoyed thematch and ran into many of the otherWaltoners while around the match.
They visited relatives in Calgary
before heading for B.C. They went
through the Okanagan Valley and
stayed at Asawya and it was very
lovely. They spent time in Kelowna
and went into Washington State to
spend half a day and enjoy lunch.
They visited more relatives in
Vancouver and then it was time to
head home again. They had great
weather with temperatures between
25-30 most days and only two to 15-
minute showers of rain. They report
a wonderful trip.

open. We also receive produce from
Nathanial Hoover and family north
of Gorrie as well as the Exeter
Distribution Centre. Our clients are
extremely grateful for this produce,
as most can’t afford to either grow
or purchase it. I would like to thank
all the Food Share’s directors who
came out faithfully every Tuesday
night at 7 p.m. to help pick the
produce from our garden. We would
welcome anybody who would like
to come out, do a bit of hoeing,
weeding and picking produce and
show your support for the Food
Share. Show up any Tuesday night
around 7 p.m. and lend a hand.
We are happy to be part of the
food drive that our local B.D.O.
office and Farm Credit Corp. will
be doing this fall. We have a couple
other potential food drives coming
up. On Thanksgiving Saturday, we
are hoping to have a “Stuff the Bus”
promotion in Wingham and also the
neighbouring towns. Stay tuned as
there might also be a food drive in
conjunction with another promotion
coming up in November.

County warden chair
Huron East Deputy-Mayor Joe
Steffler announced on Wednesday,
Aug. 7 that he will seek the position
of Huron County Warden this
December.
This means there will be an
election on Dec. 4, as Howick’s Art
Versteeg was the first to declare he
would run for the position at
council’s July 4 meeting.
Steffler, a former resident of both
Grey Township and Brussels, has
been a councillor in Huron East for
10 years. He worked for the county’s
public works department for 35
years.
He says that if elected, he hopes to
dedicate his time to implementing
recommendations made in the report
on governance made by consultant
George Cuff in May, 2012.
Steffler has been a proponent of
looking ahead and planning for the
future through economic
development throughout his years
on Huron County Council.
In an interview after the meeting,
Steffler said that the county has to
be looking five and 10 years down
the road and halting the exodus of
county youth. He said the county
has to provide educational
opportunities and opportunity for its
youth, similar to the Huron East
initiative HealthKick.
The election will take place at
Huron County Council’s Dec. 4
meeting. The election of a warden is
done through secret ballot.
