School board’sreading systemhelps studentsThe Empower program began twoyears ago at Avon Maitland DistrictSchool Board (AMDSB)elementary schools.
The program was designed to
help students who have significant
difficulty acquiring age appropriate
reading skills. The program, taught
by special education resource
teachers, takes small groups of
students (six to eight) and gives
them one hour of instruction, four to
five times a week, on reading skills.
They are given 110 hours of
instruction in total.
The elementary students are in
Grades 2 to 5. “Often these students
have already been indentified with a
learning disability in reading or are
students who have been identified
as at risk of that identification. We
have also had quite a few students
who are English language learners
in the program,” said special
education consultant Amy Kipfer.
Kipfer said in the first year
students improved, on average, six
reading levels during the course of
the program. “It was very
successful. Teachers started to ask if
the improved reading levels would
stick or if students would regress,”
she said, adding, “We took a
snapshot of the students that were in
the program last year and we did not
see any negative numbers, not one
student regressed.”
After seeing the success at the
elementary level, the program was
expanded this past September into
the AMDSB secondary schools. The
students are in Grade 9 or 10 and
again are students who have been
identified as having difficulty
reading.
The secondary program is
structured slightly different from the
elementary program. The class size
ranges from four to eight students;
the lessons are 76 minutes long and
taught five days a week, for a total
of 70 lessons. The students receive
an English credit.
Kipfer said in the first semester 29
students were successful in the
program – improving three reading
levels. She said 22 of those students
hold a learning disability
designation.
In both the elementary and
secondary programs, students are
taught five Empower strategies – in
sequence. The strategies include
sounding out, rhyming, peeling off
(finding the root word), vowel alert
and the spy strategy. Each lesson is
scripted.
At the secondary level the
Empower reading program is taken
one step further and student are
being taught comprehension of the
text they are reading.
Kipfer said teachers are noting
that the students are becoming
transformed learners. “Students are
seeing success in other areas and it
is helping them in their other
subjects,” she said.
The Empower reading program is
taught in all school in the AMDSB.
It came out of research done at Sick
Kids Hospital in Toronto.
