At the July 16 meeting of Huron East Council, the first since the passing of former McKillop Ward Councillor Bill Siemon, Mayor Bernie MacLellan offered some kind words on his fallen friend. He said there was a large council- related turn-out at Siemon’s July 12 memorial service in Brodhagen, a turnout that Siemon’s wife Vicki andhis family really appreciated.“I really enjoyed Bill’s service,” MacLellan told his fellow councillors, saying that he heard a lot of stories at the service he had never heard before, but that none of them surprised him. MacLellan admitted that when he first met Siemon, he wasn’t quite sure how to approach him and what he was all about, saying that his first impression of Siemon was that he was “a grumpy old man”.As MacLellan got to knowSiemon, however, he could tell that Siemon was a “straight shooter” who “shot from the hip”. He said Siemon was always willing to research the issues at hand and during a discussion, while he may not have agreed with all opinions, he certainly respected them. MacLellan also pointed to Siemon’s love of the environment, saying that stewardship and conservation were both causes thathad been very close to Siemon’sheart. “When Bill worked for the conservation authorities, he did it because it was the right thing to do,” MacLellan said. “He felt it was a privilege, rather than a duty.” MacLellan then asked councillors, staff and members of the public in attendance to join him in a moment of silence to honour Siemon. For the meeting a single white rose and the card from Siemon’smemorial service were placed atwhat had been his spot at the council table.
