Jack would have celebrated his 90th birthday this coming October. He will be remembered as a good man, a good neighbour, friendly, amiable and involved in living. Jack was raised on a farm just east of the village, in the house where Carmen and Betty Riley now reside. He was one of five children and the oldest son of Ernest and Mable Lee.He worked off the farm from the ageof 14 at odd jobs and on a threshingcrew to help his parents financially. One summer he was part of a trio of young men from the area who went west to work, and another winter he worked in Sudbury. When he felt it was time to settle down on familiar turf, in 1946, he purchased a small house in the village and became a loyal employee of Radford’s [Garage] Farm Equipment until his retirement at age 65. Throughout their marriage Jack was a partner to Helen in her positions as caretaker, first at the Londesborough United Church and later at Hullett Central Public School. Jack and Helen Radford were married on December 26, 1941 and raised three children. Those children and their offspring were a source of great joy and activity for Jack. Jack and his family were a mutualadmiration society. Jack and Helenspent their entire married life in thevillage having moved into their present home in 1961. Community involvement kept Jack busy all his life. Through those activities he touched many lives and a large number of those people attended at the Blyth and District Community Centre to share memories and say thanks to his family. Many will remember that Jack taught Sunday school and was a Scout leader for many years. The Lee pew at Londesborough United was seldom unoccupied on a Sunday morning and Jack served on many of the committees within the church over the years. Sports also played a large role in Jack’s life. He played ball and hockey in his early years and later coached, umpired and refereed for local teams. Jack bowled with theLondesborough Men’s League fromits beginnings in 1946 and wonwhen he participated in a senior’s tournament in Toronto in 1989. Camping at Shelter Valley filled many summers weeks for years. Accepted into the Mason brotherhood in 1955, Jack was an active member of the Londesborough Lodge until his passing. He held many of the lodge governing positions through those years and gave up the secretarial position just within the past two years. Members of the Happy Gang Seniors since its inception, Jack and Helen were always there to set up tables for the monthly card parties. And one never needed to ask Jack twice if he’d like a hand or two of cards either at the hall or at home. Although not a Lions member, Jack and Helen supported the activities of this group.Never one to sit idle, in his lateryears Jack was a driver for theClinton Adult Day Centre program. Even this spring he was keeping in touch with folks through the internet. Our family is just one of many who carries a heavy heart these days and miss his presence in our lives and the life of the village. His was a life to emulate. By BRENDA RADFORD Call 523-4296 PEOPLE AROUND LONDESBORO NEWS FROM LONDESBORO When it comes to alcohol, size matters If you were asked to pour a standard sized drink of beer, wine or spirits, how much would you serve? When it comes to alcohol, size matters because the amount of alcohol is different in each drink. Knowing the size of a standard serving can help you make informed choices about drinking and cut the health risks related to alcohol. While drinking alcohol is a personal choice, and most people drink sensibly, the newly-launched Rethink Your Drinking campaign asks Ontarians to look at why, how much and when they drink, with an eye to reduce the risks of disease and injury. “Rethink Your Drinking is based on Canada’s Low-Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines (LRADG) to help you make choices about alcohol use,” says Laura Armstrong, Public Health Promoter with the Huron County Health Unit. “We’re not suggesting people don’t drink at all, but we want people to rethink their drinking and gradually reduce their consumption. We know that seven in 10 people in Huron drink alcohol beyond the LRADG.” The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health identified more than 200 diseases and injuries related to alcohol use. These include liver cirrhosis and several types of cancer including breast cancer.
