Locals enjoy trip to Maritimes
Henk and Agnes Ten Pas and
Gerri den Dekker have enjoyed a
nine-day trip to the east coast. They
flew from Toronto on the day of the
big flood. They arrived at the Park
and Fly and the torrent of rain kept
them trapped in their car for over an
hour, with the water rising halfway
up the car door.
Their flight was delayed by only a
half hour and they arrived in
Moncton, New Brunswick in the
wee hours of the morning. They
rented a car for their journey and
appreciated the great help of the
GPS. They headed the next day for
Wentworth, Nova Scotia to visit
with former Brussels friends John
and Gerie Visser on their farm. They
farm with their son and grow hay as
a cash crop and blueberries. They
have no livestock. The trio
enjoyed meeting their family
members.
They then continued their journey
and spent a night in Dartmouth and
the next day to Halifax. The
highlight of the trip was to go to Pier
21 in the harbour of Halifax. Many
European immigrants, during the
1940s and 50s, landed and stayed at
Pier 21 until sponsors were found
for them. It is a very historical
building with many plaques being
placed by immigrants who came to
Canada. They looked and found
Henk and Agnes’s brother-in-law’s
name, Case Rietkerk, engraved on a
plaque from landing at Pier 21. The
tour and visit of the building brought
back many memories for the trio. A
second memorable attraction in
Halifax is the factory where they
could watch them blow Nova Scotia
Crystal. This is the only place in
Canada you can watch artists create
mouth-blown glass and hand-cut
crystal. It was fantastic and very
beautiful.
The trio then headed for Cape
Breton Island and Peggy’s Cove to
watch the high and low tide. They
happened to be there when it was an
artist weekend and the shores were
covered with artists painting
beautiful sea scrapes, rocks and
fishing boats. They would sell them
later at a show.
They then headed to P.E.I. and
went over the Confederation Bridge.
The landscape of P.E.I. is beautiful
with rolling hills, white churches
and the red, red soil. Fields of
potatoes were planted in very
straight rows, again due to the aid of
GPS. They went to visit the site of
Anne of Green Gables. It cost just
over $200 to make the return trip
back from P.E.I. They headed to
New Brunswick and went to Saint
John and found a city of very old
buildings. Henk admired the
wonderful brickwork of the 1800s
which is prevalent in the city. They
went to Hopewell Rocks and saw the
unique Flowerpot trees and the rise
and fall of the tides in the Bay of
Fundy. This was their last day of the
trip and then it was time to return to
Ontario. Henk and Agnes report the
people are very friendly wherever
they went. Henk spent time speaking
with a local fisherman and learned
the boats go out around 2 a.m. and
fish for nine or 10 hours for lobster,
crab and clams. The ladies went
shopping one day and Henk met a
man while waiting and found he
knew where Brussels was and was a
friend of Brent Kipfer. They also ran
into people that used to live in Huron
County and have a
daughter that stills lives and works
in Huron.
They also had stopped in a Tim
Hortons in the town of Shediac.
When driving on the Cabot Trail
they saw a moose, a moose and calf
and a big black bear. Gas was $1.36
and the temperatures were 30-34
degrees everyday as they enjoyed
their 2,600-kilometre journey. The
corn is six-feet high and Henk and
Agnes are thrilled with their
adventure to the east coast.
It was a wonderful adventure and
opportunity for Teagan McGavin
last week. She was chosen, along
with four other girls, to dance on the
stage at Disneyland. Jeff McGavin
accompanied his daughter on the
trip. They were away for about five
days. The opportunity arose when
Tom Richardson, a choreographer
from New York, came to her dance
studio to see the facility. He
arranged scholarships for the five
girls to go to Florida. The girls
learned 13 different dance routines
from many different choreographers
and were in the studios to practise
for about six hours a day. There
were about 53 Intermediate dancers
from all over the States and Canada.
They performed two dances at the
final Gala evening on stage. The
other girls were Mikayla Volmer of
Wingham, Bailea and Meghan Erb
of Goderich and Claire Holmes of
Walkerton. Teagan reports it was a
fantastic experience and was really
fun.
It was party time on the weekend
for Paul Elliott. He was celebrating a
special birthday and family and
friends gathered to help him. Cathy
and children Jeff, Leslie, Rachel and
Matt gathered together his many
friends and relatives to welcome
Paul to his 60s. Congratulations Paul
and happy birthday.
A group of 15 young adults and
chaperones have returned from an
adventure to help others. The group
from F.E. Madill Secondary School
flew to Nicaragua to join with
another group from Flin Flon,
Manitoba to help build a water
reservoir. The group worked very
hard digging the hole with shovels
and pick axes to a depth of a metre
and by the end it was 15 by 20 feet.
They formed a human chain to haul
bricks up the hill to line the hole and
get it ready for cement. They were in
the community of El Trapiche that
has access to water for four hours a
day only, so that is why they need a
reservoir.
The group is associated with Free
the Children group and they met the
director, Craig Kielburger. They are
the fourth school to go and help and
they were amazed at how hard the
group worked. They worked from
8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. with a lunch hour
break. It was very hot and they were
encouraged to drink lots of water
and rest when necessary. They had
rain everyday, except two, and it
would come up very quickly and
then pass. They stayed at a very nice
place in San Marcos and were
bussed to the work site each day.
The rooms had fans, mostly cold
water and great food. Meals,
including their lunches, included a
delicious rice dish with fruits and
vegetables and was really good.
They report they had a wonderful
trip.
The Walton trio of Shannon, Jacob
and MacKenzie McGavin were part
of this group along with Lanie
Smith, Sadie Chalmers, Catherine
Peach, Celeste Peel, Sarah Cook,
Chantelle McWhinney, Justine Van
Veen, Deb and Shay Green, Danielle
Beaugrande, Amanda Fisher and
Destiny Sheppard. Megan Dolmage
was to have gone but illness forced
her to stay at home and miss the
eight-day trip. Congratulations to all
members of the group for their
commitment to helping others.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Kristen Curreri,
Dianne Flood, Sandra Josling,
Kelly Boven, Sharon Godkin,
Sherry McCall, Corrina Strong, Ken
Williamson, Christopher Ritchie,
Curtis Ryan, Andrew Van Vliet,
Anne Williamson, Karin McDonald
Calhoun, Andrea Taylor, Michael
Warwick, Bradley Fraser, Laura
Godkin, Alivia McCall MacBain,
Charles Gulutzen, Lanette Todd and
Jim Blake. Happy birthday to all.
