What a week of hot, hot, hot
weather. Many folks complained
about it but my thought is that “you
don’t have to shovel it”. The heat
makes it difficult to work and
accomplish much, but remember to
keep hydrated and take plenty of
breaks. The hay farmers are happy
and I have seen lots of fields being
cut and baled during the week. The
wheat harvest began about last
Monday and some area farmers have
their crop off. Many found the
moisture still too high and have only
done test strips. Our area was very
lucky when the storm went through
on Friday evening. According to our
rain gauge, we had about an inch of
water during the evening but
Brussels had almost two inches just
from the first round of rain. The
Winthrop/Seaforth area was hard hit
with as many as a half dozen sheds
going down, rooves peeled on
houses, a block silo falling over, silo
tops blowing away and tree and after
tree being toppled. Around Walton
/Brussels area it looked like mostly
branches and a few trees coming
down, so it was clean-up time formost on the weekend.Congratulations to Alec and Eileen
Townsend on celebrating their 52nd
wedding anniversary last week.
There was no special “celebration” it
was just another day, reports Alec.
The Optimist Park is the perfect
place to hold a family reunionreports the Shaw family. The yearlyevent had about 70 descendants of
Alex and Pearl Shaw attending.
They enjoyed a barbecued pig with
lots of other food to complement the
meat. Charlie Shaw was the oldest
relative there (over 85) and Callum
Shaw was the youngest at one and ahalf. Frances Shaw entertained withher many humorous stories – like the
story of how she helped the cow over
the bridge. The relative joining them
from the farthest away was Dave
Henry. The day concluded with an
enjoyable fireworks display!
Catching up on some news aboutSister Teresa Ryan. She is back inCanada to stay after spending five-
and-a-half years in Kenya. She was
doing mission work and working
with AIDS victims in Africa. She has
returned to her home in London and
we will hopefully see her around the
Walton area more frequently.

PEOPLE AROUNDWALTON
One lucky group
Rachel Miners, centre, is a big fan of the British band One Direction and was skunked when
tickets to the band’s recent show in Toronto were sold out. She began entering an online
contest through Oreo cookies every day and was soon informed she had won. She and her
sisters Jessica, left, and Allison, right, headed down to Toronto by swanky SUV (had they
lived further away, the company would have flown them to Toronto) and were treated with two
nights at the city’s Hilton hotel and $1,000 in spending money. It was an experience, Rachel
says, she won’t soon forget. (Vicky Bremner photo)402 Queen St., Blyth • 519-523-4535

Glanvilles host diesel
conversion group
Ken and Betty Glanville hosted
the 35th Repowered Diesel Confab
gathering at their farm last weekend.
It is a meeting to exchange ideas on
converting any motor from gas
guzzlers to diesel. The folks were
from all over Ontario and the U.S.,
including Pennsylvania, North
Carolina and Ohio. A very unique
and interesting vehicle was a 1926
four-cylinder Henderson motorcycle
driven there from Walkerton
area.
There were between 85-100 folks
come and go throughout the day
with about 80 staying for supper.
They had barbecued pork chops on
Saturday night, cooked by friends
Steve Dennis and Brian Wilbee, and
Pine Ridge chicken. They had many
stay over camping at the farm as
well.
She may have a broken arm, but
that doesn’t keep Pauline Gulutzen
down. Pauline and Sharon
Stephenson went to Ypsilanti,
Michigan for the weekend to enjoy
an “Elvis” weekend. The event was
held at the beautiful Riverside Park
and it was hot, hot, hot. Down in
front of the stage, where you could
see everything, they sat in the lawn
chairs and were serenaded by Elvis
after Elvis. They report having a
great time together!
We hope that Marg Bennett is
feeling better after spending about a
week in the Clinton Hospital. We
hope she is feeling better and is
doing well at home.
We understand that Margery
Huether is now a resident of the new
Maplewood Manor. We hope she is
enjoying her new surroundings and
is coping well.
The countryside is changing
again. The high hoe is busy digging
a pit at Bachert Meats and at
Brandon Blake’s – a new area
added to the cattle barn. A farm of
Henry Grobbink’s - the former
Johnston farm on Walton Road has
had many of the trees cut down and
the shed is being torn down. The
hole was dug and the foundation for
a new garage was poured at the farm
of John Braecker.
The Walton Hall hosted a Blyth
Theatre dinner on Saturday evening.
They fed the group of 54 a roast
beef dinner. Helping for the evening
were Judy Lee, Judy Emmrich, Jo-
Ann McDonald, Barb Durrell and
Karen Hoegy. It was a warm
evening in the hall but the time flies
when you’re having fun and meeting
new folks.
George and Harry Zwep and Henk
Pardys have returned from an eight-
day motorcycle trip to the east coast.
Brother Jerry Zwep travelled with
the trio for the first day, as far
as Port Hope, and then returned
home.
The group left on a Sunday
morning in the rain and drove for a
couple of days in it. They travelled
through New York, Vermont, New
Hampshire and Maine and then into
New Brunswick and Cape Breton
Island. They travelled the Cabot
Trail and they report it was
breathtaking and extremely
beautiful. Returning back to New
Brunswick, they toured the Gaspé
Peninsula. When they were crossing
over the St. Lawrence on the ferry,
they were lucky enough to see
whales. They visited family in
Kingston and Levene on their way
home. They travelled 6,000
kilometre in total and report the east
coast of Canada is beautiful.
