Huron East not likely to pursue appeal
After a nearly-one-hour-long
closed session, Huron East Council
announced at its July 16 meeting
that the municipality would likely
not pursue an appeal of the St.
Columban wind project.
Huron East Mayor Bernie
MacLellan had announced at the
July 2 council meeting that council
would initiate an appeal, but after
receiving a legal opinion, and
holding the aforementioned closed
session, council balked at the appeal.
At the July 16 meeting, MacLellan
announced that the motion made on
July 2 to pursue an appeal will be
reconsidered at council’s next
meeting, which will be held on July
30 in Brussels at the Brussels
Business and Cultural Centre.
MacLellan told members of the
media, as well as a smattering of
Huron East Against Turbines
(HEAT) members who stayed until
the lengthy closed session had been
completed, that after researching the
issue further, there was no way
Huron East could consider legal
action without incurring huge
legal costs and likely losing in the
end.
“Based on the legal opinion we
have and the research we’ve done,
we do not have a legal position
that we can support,” MacLellan
said.
He said that the position council
was attempting to take “didn’t even
support what it takes for an appeal”.
MacLellan then said that HEAT’s
appeal of the project, because it’s
being approached federally, as
opposed to provincially, may have
more merit and that council wished
them the best with the proceedings.
MacLellan said that council would
like to be granted intervenor status in
HEAT’s legal proceeding, if
possible.
“We would like an opportunity to
comment,” he said.
MacLellan added that council felt
as though it had been “kicked in the
teeth” by the whole process, from
not having any of the municipality’s
concerns considered to not having
a reasonable shot at appealing
the project.
The motion will be read and voted
on at the July 30 meeting, which
starts at 8 p.m. at the Brussels
Business and Cultural Centre.

Just for fun and development
The U8 Minor Soccer Tournament filled Sparling’s soccer fields, just south of Blyth, with fun
and excitement on Saturday as teams took to the pitch to compete against each other in a
just-for-fun way. With no scores to worry about, the children just tried their best. Shown above
