The three PeeWee players are Bennett Newell, Jack Pipe and Logan Kellington, who will be playing for Chepstow. Brody TenPas is the Midget player and he will be playing for the Teeswater Otters. TenPas was a member of the Teeswater Bantams that lost out in the championship final last year at the Eastern Canadians. Since he played for Teeswater last year, he said they invited him to play for the Midget team this year. The Canadian Midget boys championship will be played in Quebec, Aug. 5-11. The team has been quite successful this year. The Teeswater Midgets were finalists in the Mitchell tournament, won the tournament in Kitchener and they won the elimination tournament. “We will be Team OntarioI at the Canadian championships,” said TenPas. The provincial championships are being played in Teeswater this weekend. “I am looking forward to the Canadian championships,” the right fielder said. “We are looking to do well at the provincials.” Jack Pipe is a utility player on the PeeWee team. He played last year in Walkerton and is looking forward to playing with Chepstow this year. He said the team lost out in the final of the Ontario Amateur Softball Association (OASA) tournament earlier this year so will be the second representative from Ontario at the Eastern Canadians. Logan Kellington is entering his third season with Chesptow and is the shortstop on the team. The Eastern Canadians are being played in Fredericton, New Brunswick on Aug. 22-25. Kellington pointed out that the team won a tournament in Stratford. “We should do okay at the Eastern Canadians,” he said. So far this season, he has hit one home run, has added three triples and was batting .425 at the OASA championships. Bennett Newell is the team’s catcher. “I think we’ll do pretty good at the Eastern Canadians,” he said. He said he got invited to play on the Chepstow team through Gary Pipe, who is a coach for the Brussels PeeWees. “I’m a decent hitter,” he said. The Chepstow PeeWees are having a fundraiser on Aug. 15 at the Mildmay Recreation Complex. There will be a barbecue and corn roast from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with supper being by donation. There will then be an Elvis tribute show at 7:30 p.m., starring Peter Irwin. Advance tickets for the show are $20 for adults and $10 for youth 18 years or under. Tickets at the door are $25 and $15. Tickets are available from Liesemer’s Home Hardware in Mildmay, Boomer’s Cosy Restaurant in Teeswater, Holst Office Supplies in Walkerton and Cinnamon Jim’s in Brussels. There will be a car wash and barbecue in Brussels on Saturday, Aug. 3. By Jim Brown Special to The Citizen Taking Brussels ability to the championships Several players from Brussels are showing the country what they’re capable of during upcoming baseball championships. Show are, from left, Ty Sebastian who recently returned from the U21 Men’s Fast Pitch International Championship in Saskatoon and who is competing at the national championships in August, Bennett Newell, Jack Pipe and Logan Kellington who are heading for the PeeWee championship with Chepstow and Brody TenPas who plays for the Midget Teeswater Otters. (Photo submitted) International win ‘didn’t sink in’ right away; Sebastian Ty Sebastian of Brussels had a lot of reasons to be smiling when he got home from the U21 Men’s Fast Pitch International Championship in Saskatoon earlier this month. While each of his six home runs and 17 runs batted in, and his .529 average in the round-robin and and .545 average in the playoffs likely factored in, nothing could compare with leading his team to victory at the event as the captain, even if it took him a little while to realize that. “It really didn’t sink in until I was on the plane home after the game,” he said. “We were up 9-3 going into the last inning and I knew, we just needed three outs and then we had this, this was really going to happen.” Sebastian said after they won the game and he was happy, but he didn’t really start to feel the excitement until he was on the plane. Even then it was slightly subdued. “It wasn’t until the next day that I woke up and realized, yeah, that really happened,” Sebastian said.
