Chalmers heads up service Christian Reformed Church welcomes new pastor Pastor Gary Van Leeuwen and his family recently moved to Blyth so he could become the new pastor at the Blyth Christian Reformed Church. Having started with the church on June 1, Van Leeuwen was a pastor in Georgetown before coming to Blyth. Having grown up in Listowel, coming to Blyth was a little like homecoming for the pastor. “Compared to Georgetown, this is like coming home, coming back to this area and to a small town,” he said. While Blyth being so close to his original home is appealing, Van Leeuwen said that it had little to do with the decision to move to the area. “I was needed here and it was a great opportunity,” he said. “We were looking for a smaller town and we felt like this is where God was leading us.” Van Leeuwen’s family includes his wife Helen and his children Emily, age 10, and Thomas, age 6. Prior to working in Georgetown, Van Leeuwen worked in Beamsville and also spent time overseas and working in areas like Mexico. He also served as a chaplain in the port of Montreal. He attended Calvin TheologicalSeminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan, before attending Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. He is currently working on a doctorate through Acadia Divinity College in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Prior to finding his calling, Van Leeuwen, like his wife, was attending the University of Waterloo where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. Van Leeuwen and his family bought the parsonage owned by the Christian Reformed Church as the family was looking at buying and the church was looking at selling. He explained that the situation was serendipitous because he was looking forward to having a home he could modify to his liking. “I do casual renovations,” he said. “I’m always in the middle of some project or another.” The Blyth Christian Reformed Church is located on Queen Street in Blyth and has services at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday with the last sunday night of every month being a combined service with the Clinton and Vanastra Christian Reformed Churches. For more information, visit www.blythcrc.ca or call 519-523- 4743. Van Leeuwen is available at the church or through e-mail at garyvl68@gmail.com Sympathy is extended to Elsie Walsh and family on the death of her husband James (Jim) Walsh who passed away this past week. Deb and Fred Hakkers spent Saturday night visiting with Nancy McInnes of Glencoe and on Sunday they visited with Deb’s aunt and uncle John and Verna Evans of Watford. Happy birthday to Hayden Diebold who celebrates July 25; Kesley Kerr, July 26; Doug Craig, Atwood, July 30; Emily deCorte, Zurich, and Corrie Wallace, July 31. Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, July 21 were Logan and Ryan Chalmers. Ushering were Lavern Clark and David Onn. Floyd Herman was music director. Sadie Chalmers was in charge of the service in the auditorium. Sadie welcomed everyone to church and drew everyone’s attention to the announcements printed in the bulletin. The call to worship was the singing of the two hymns, “Come In, Come In and Sit Down” and “Come All You People.” The opening prayer was said in unison. The first hymn was “The Church is Wherever God’s People.” Floyd Herman told a short story about the anthem, “I Love to Tell the Story” that the choir sang. Dickie Bird Saturday, July 27 Sponsored by the Blyth BIA Schedule subject to change It is a part of the cross! (J.C. Ryle) Let it be a settled principle in our minds, that the true Christian must always enter the kingdom of God “through much tribulation” (Acts 14:22). If we are faithful and decided servants of Christ--the world will certainly hate us, as it hated our Master. In one way or another, true grace will always be persecuted. No consistency of conduct, however faultless; no kindness and amiability of character, however striking--will exempt a believer from the world’s dislike, so long as he lives. It is foolish to be surprised at this. It is mere waste of time to murmur at it.It is a part of the cross, and we must bear it patiently. The children of Cain will hate the children of Abel, as long as the earth continues. “Marvel not, my brethren,” says John, “if the world hates you.” “If you were of the world,” says our Lord, “the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world--therefore the world hates you!” (1 John 3:13; John 15:18-19) This world is not our home! Our best things are yet to come!
