dancer Ken Scott will be taking to
the Dancing With the Stars stage
once again with his partner Cidalia
Cabral, a personal support worker
from Goderich.
The duo, who practice both in
Goderich at the East Street Station
and at the Blyth East Side Dance
Studio, will show off what Cabral
has learned under Scott’s tutelage
when, alongside five other couples,
they dance the night away on
Oct. 5.
The event, which is the primary
fundraiser for Huron Victim
Services, sees professional dancers
like Scott paired with local
celebrities like Emergency Services
Centre Co-ordinator Stephanie
Currie, who is dancing with Blyth
East Side Dance Studio instructor
and owner Les Cook this year.
Scott and Cabral will be
performing the Waltz and a swing
dance at the event and have been
practicing for several months to
prepare for it.
Despite the practice, however, the
duo said that there are some
challenges that they face.
“While the swing may be the more
involved of the two dances, the waltz
requires some changes to the way
people move,” Scott explained. “Youhave to get your partner used tostretching and taking longer strides.”
Cabral agreed, stating that the
waltz is more challenging because it
requires her to twist and be more
graceful, however both feel that it’s
fun and a great challenge.
“We practice once a week and
we’re working on being ready for
the event,” Scott said.
Scott, who has been involved in
the event for four years, said that he
got involved when Cook asked him
after Scott and his wife Laura were
taking lessons in Blyth.
“Les said they needed another
male instructor and I agreed, as long
as Les would help me,” he said.
The real help, however, has come
from Laura according to Scott and
Cabral, who has helped Scott teach
some of the dances more intricate
steps.
Cabral has attended four of the
five Dancing with the Stars events
and was encouraged to get involved
and, thanks to the time she’s spent
dancing now, she wants to continue
on.
“It is outside of my comfort zoneso it’s something that pushes me,”she said. “I definitely want to keepgoing though. I’ve danced before.
My family is Portuguese, so I’ve
danced the polka, but I’m looking
forward to continuing with other
dances.”
Cabral works as an individual
personal support worker in private
homes which allows her to be more
in touch with each patient, she says.
One of her clients suggested she
become a part of the event.
Tickets for the event go on sale on
July 18 and will be available on a
first-come-first-serve basis at Zehrs
in Goderich. The sale runs from 4
p.m. to 7 p.m. and typically sells out
fast according to organizers.
