Walton Brewers top Blyth Barons in 4-3 HCFL actionThe Walton Brewers edged past the Blyth Barons by a score of 4-3, in Huron County Fastball League play on July 9. With the Brewers holding a 4-1 lead after six innings, the Barons scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but were unable to bring home the tying run, although they had runners on second and third. Darryl Houston had a double and triple for the Brewers. Hitting one double each were Barry Young, Matt Shortreed and Jeff Smith. Scott Lealess had a single and two walks for the Barons. Rapping out single base hits were Shawn Bromley, Mike McDonald and Chris Stewart. Scott McDonald started on the mound for the Brewers and was relieved by Jeff Smith. They combined for nine strikeouts. Adam Cronin went the distance on the mound for the Barons. Veteran Walton player Kevin Murray said it was a well-played game. He saidstarting pitcher Scott McDonaldpitched well and Jeff Smith came onin relief and also pitched well. “It was a good team effort,” he said. “It was a big win for us.” Senior Blyth player, Mike McDonald said Adam Cronin pitched a great game for the Barons. “Their two pitchers combined for a good game,” he said. He noted that Mike Haggitt played his second game for the Barons. The Barons were in Sebringville last night (Wednesday) for a game against the Junior Sting. On Friday, July 19 the Barons play host to the Brussels Tigers beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Blyth ballpark. Blyth travels to Goderich on Monday, July 22 for a game against the Grizzlies beginning at 8:30 p.m. The Brewers were at home last night (Wednesday) playing the Goderich Grizzlies in a make-up contest. Walton hosts the Sebringville Junior Sting on Wednesday, July 24 beginning at 8 p.m. at the Walton ballpark. Brewers douse Barons The Blyth Barons couldn’t top the Walton Brewers when they faced off on July 9. The Brewers walked away with a 4-3 win after spending most of the game up. (Jim Brown photo) Stingers manage to down Brussels Tigers The Brussels Tigers fell 5-1 to the Belmore Stingers on Saturday afternoon in a Huron County Fastball League contest. The game was played as part of the Oates Memorial Day double header at the Belmore ballpark. Kris Wright threw a three-hitter and had 11 strikeouts in going the distance on the mound for the Stingers. Shawn Daw went the distance on the mound for the Tigers and recorded nine strikeouts. Andrew Baker accounted for the lone Brussels run as he connected for a solo home run in the third inning. Also getting hits for the Tigers were Jamie Hickling with a double and Adam Corbett with a single. Veteran player Daw said it was a good game. “The guys played well,” he said. He indicated that it was an honour to take part in the Oates Memorial Day event. The game against Sebringville on July 10 was postponed and will be played at a later date. The Tigers hosted the Zurich Rangers last night (Wednesday) at the Optimist ballpark in Brussels. The Tigers travel to Blyth on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest against the Barons. Brussels plays host to the Goderich Grizzlies on Wednesday, July 24 beginning at 8:30 p.m. at the Optimist ballpark in Brussels. (Jim Brown photo) Londesborough Seniors team wins Beatrice Jordon Memorial The Londesborough Slo-Pitch Seniors Team travelled to Stratford last month to participate in the annual Beatrice Jordon Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament. There were seven teams participating from London, Stratford, St. Marys, Woodstock, Chatham/Kent, Cambridge and Londesborough. The Londesborough squad breezed by London 12-0 in the first game but lost 6-3 to Woodstock in their second showing. St. Marys then fell to Londesborough 18-10 and Londesborough moved on to play Chatham/Kent in the championship round. After the lead swinging back and forth between the two teams, Londesborough was able to down the larger centre by a score of 10-6. This is the second consecutive year the team has won the tournament. The team consists of Bob Armstrong, David Sleightholm, Doc Miller, Doug Scrimgeour, Glen Webster, Gord Machan, John Elliott, Ken Balzer, Nancy Barrett, Phil Beard, Marg Beard, Ray Baynton, Rob Shaddick, Vicki Hanna and Ken Scott. The tournament requires at least two female players over the age of 50 and at least two male players over the age of 65 on the field at all time. This year the team took to the field looking very uniform as Elliott had purchased the team jerseys. The Beatrice Jordon Memorial tournament is held in honour of Jordon who was instrumental in organizing slo-pitch for seniors in the Stratford area. Big winners For the second year in a row the Londesborough Slo-Pitch Seniors Team travelled to Stratford and came home with the gold from the Beatrice Jordon Memorial Tournament.
