Peters named to Team Canada U18 select camp
Blyth native and member of the
OHL’s Plymouth Whalers, Alex
Peters is one of 42 players who has
been invited to try out for Team
Canada’s U18 team.
Peters will head to the selection
camp on July 25 to try out as a
defenceman as one of the top 14 in
Canada, however he doesn’t
know how many will make the final
cut.
Alongside the 14 defencemen, 24
forwards and four goaltenders will
head to the selection camp in
Toronto. All the players were born in
1996.
“I got a call from my agent telling
me that I had been invited to the
select camp,” Peters explained. “I
got pretty ecstatic at that point.”
Peters said he knew the
tournament was coming up but never
anticipated being invited to the
camp.
“I got a call from the Whalers’
goalie, who made the U.S. team,”
Peters said. “He asked if I had made
it, but the e-mail hadn’t even gone
out yet. Then I got a call a little later
on from my agent.”
He also said he can’t predict how
things will go from here.
“You know you just have to try
your best, work as hard as you
can and hope you get picked,” he
said.
The tournament will be held in
Breclav, Czech Republic and
Piestany, Slovakia from August 5-
10.
Peters said that getting to this
point has had a lot to do with his
focus.
“Hockey has always been my
number one priority,” he said. “I do
other sports, but it’s my main focus.”
The team will be coached by Dale
Hunter of the London Knights who
visited Blyth last year as part of a
program to bring minor hockey
players in to meet and observe
players from the team.
Dominique Ducharme, head coach
of the Halifax Mooseheads, and D.J.
Smith, head coach of the Oshawa
Generals, will be joining Hunter on
the bench.

Legion track and field held
Ten area athletes represented
District C at the Ontario Legion
track and field championships held
in Sudbury this past weekend. Each
year District C sends a contingent of
approximately 40 athletes to
compete at this annual competition.
Brandon Marshall, competing for
the first time in the pentathlon for
ages 15 years and under, claimed the
fourth best point total in the 100-
metre hurdles, shot put, long jump,
high jump and 1,000-metre run.
Teammate Anthony Vader
competing in the 8 event octathlon
for 17 and under boys had a grueling
competition in 110-metre hurdles,
400-metre, shot put, long jump, 100-
metre, high jump, javelin and 1,000-
metre and also clinched a fourth
place finish.
After weeks of faithful practice,
Karissa Schiestel threw an inspiring
‘personal best’ in the discus to claim
the silver medal and second place
overall. Her throw of 29.42 metres
was over four metres farther than she
had previously thrown.
Marion Studhalter also had a good
meet earning a new ‘personal best’
in the 800-metre (2:29.96). In the
2,000-metre steeplechase she
cleared the hurdles and water hazard
with ease and earned fourth place.
In the jumping pits, Naomi
VanStuyvenberg leaped farther than
ever before with a leap of 10.47
metres in triple jump.
Lyndon Smith has been improving
his sprint times with every meet and
this meet was no exception. He
earned two ‘personal bests’ in the
300-metre sprint and in the 200-
metre hurdles and a place in the
finals for the 100-metre dash.
Stuart Cameron continued his
march on improvement in the 17 and
under shot put by improving his
performance with the five kilogram
shot heaving it 13.11 metres.
Franklin Marshall, competing in
his ‘young year’ of boys 15 years
and under, ran grueling distance
races (800-metre, 1,200-metre,
2,000-metre) and earned his best
time of the season in the 800-metre
(2:26.67).
Each year local Legions
generously sponsor a District meet
and Provincial meet for Ontario
track and field athletes. There is also
a national competition in B.C. this
year, but for these local athletes, the
Sudbury meet signals the final meet
of the season. The athletes have been
practicing and competing since
February and have earned a well
deserved rest.
Cheryl and the kitchen staff were
kept hopping this past week at the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club.
The Tuesday ladies kicked off the
week with golf followed by lunch on
the patio. Joyce Adams and Maxine
Robinson took home the longest putt
prizes. Tuesday afternoon a group
from Pioneer Hi-Bred got together
for nine holes of golf and a steak
buffet in the dining lounge.
On Wednesday, July 10 a group of
27 senior men enjoyed a great
golfing morning before lunch in the
golfers’ lounge. Don Bone shot a 36
to capture both low net and gross for
the day. Hugh Clugston finished
second and Steve Nixon, third. Bone
also took home the closest-to-the-
pin award.
Thursday men’s night saw 78
golfers hit the links. Don Edgar
again led the way with a great round
of 36. The longest drive was given to
Scott Helder while the closest-to-
the-pin winners were Ben
Dailleboust and Trevor Hopf.
The longest putt prize winners
were Bill Robinson, Richard
Watson, Trevor Beck, Bill Johnston
and Dan McBurney with the hidden
scores going to Bob Foxton, Ross
Gibson, Pete Inglis and Matt Harris.
Friday, July 12 the club was
pleased to host the birthday party for
75-year-young Doug Rathwell and
long-time friend 66-year-old Bill
Quipp. This great group of 24 guys
from the Atwood area played 18
holes of golf before joining with
friends and spouses for a steak
barbecue supper in the dining
lounge.
Saturday the club helped celebrate
Catherine and Murray Mulvey’s
50th wedding anniversary. Close to
100 family and friends joined the
happy couple for a beef buffet in the
dining lounge. The guests were able
to enjoy the view from the
scenic patio on the fantastic summer
day.
