THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 18, 2013.Sebastian leads men’s team to international goldBrussels native Ty Sebastian ledhis teammates to victory in the U21Men’s Fast Pitch International Championship in Saskatoon lastweek. Team Ontario trounced New Zealand in the final game of thecompetition 9-3 on Friday to makefor a perfect 5-0 record at the tournament and bring home the gold. During the championship final,Sebastian went 3 for 4 at the plate, with a home run according to
Blackburn News.
Previously they had faced off and
beat New Zealand twice before, 5-1
in qualifier action on Friday and 13-
10 earlier in the match on
Wednesday. During the Wednesday
game, Sebastian knocked a three-run
home run into the stands in the first
inning, his third in as many games.
On Thursday, Ontario took on
Manitoba and mercied them, beating
them 9-0 in five innings and holding
the team to a single hit. Sebastian, on
the mound, pitched three innings,
striking out five, and hitting a home
run as he went 2-2 at the plate.
Tuesday saw Ontario take to the
field against Nova Scotia who came
back from 7-0 deficit when they took
on New Brunswick earlier that day.
Unfortunately for them, they
wouldn’t be able to repeat the feat,
losing 12-2 to Ontario. Sebastian
marked one of five home runs hit by
Ontario during the game against
Nova Scotia.
During their first game, team
Ontario took on Alberta. Both teams
were forecast as favourites, however
Ontario put to rest any doubts as to
who was the superior with an 11-1win over their western competitors.Sebastian earned four runs batted inand one home run in his four at-bats.
North Huron summer student and
Wingham resident George
Armstrong is also a member of the
team.

NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Market offers new vendors, new food experiences
What a great summer weekend,
perfect for camping and reunions
and pretty fine for just sitting under
a tree reading. So no complaining,
it’s July.
We have Robyn and Jill here this
week, adding sparkle to our lives and
enjoying the Kintail on the Road
team. It’s Kid’s Corner time once
again with help from the churches
here. The Mennonite church grounds
will be a busy spot this week as the
kids join the program of learning,
friendship, music, food and always
fun. So lots of action in that corner
of the village. If you’re feeling a
little down, drop in, especially
Friday afternoon, to see the final
presentation of all the songs and
stories that will be part of their
memory bank. The energy and
enthusiasm of children is awesome
and a joy to be around.
Friday at the market is such fun.
Besides the great food available each
week, all from our area and excellent
stuff, there were several new
vendors. Dip mixtures, dressings,
flowers, soap, jewellery, clothing,
furniture and great meat, vegetables
and desserts are all there for your
picking. Supper is a temptation as
well as your nose encourages the
purchase. Who can fight fried
onions? Music under the tent is an
ever-changing event, harp and
violins were very enjoyable last
week. The new favourite was the
tattoo booth. With Morgan and her
henna ink and steady hand, she gave
many a smile. A temporary tattoo is
a fun thing to do, consult with
Morgan and try something new. Your
kids will be impressed.
We are very fortunate to live in
this area, but you know that already.
In easy driving distance we have
several areas of weekly music
vendues. Great theatre is available
and you can see several of the
neighbours on stage in Blyth. The
new version of The Farm Show is
great and when you look close
several folks from the farm are there,
making it even funnier for the local
audience.
So take advantage of the warmth
and the scenery that is ours to enjoy.
Alma Watson is home from
hospital and Bob and Rene
Richmond are enjoying a new great-
grandchild of the finer sex.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
By Jo-Ann McDonald
A slow week but a busy weekend
at the Brussels Legion Branch.
Friday evening had the Branch Fish
Fry crew away at the Seaforth
Agricultural Centre cooking for 145
fish lovers. Volunteering for cooking
duty were Rick, Jo-Ann and LeeAnn
McDonald, Mabel Glanville, Judy
Lee and Deb Cann. Good job folks.
Saturday was the usual every other
week for euchre. Bush Whittard had
Deb Cann helping in the absence of
Jean Davidson. There were 15 tables
of players. Winners were: first, John
and Catherine Brown, 83; second,
Eileen Sellers and Marie Stewart,
78; third, Tom and Eileen Sloan, 77;
low, Clarence and Larrie, 44; most
lone hands, Ed Stewart and Glen
Sellers, eight. It was a good day with
everyone enjoying the light lunch.
The Branch was the venue for the
celebration of 45 years of marriage
for Greg and Brenda Nicholls. They
enjoyed an open house from 7 to 9
p.m. and then the music started for a
dance. There was a nice crowd to
enjoy the bounteous lunch provided
during the evening. The Nicholls
have three sons, Paul from
Engelhart, Dwayne, Wellesley and
Chad, Elmira. They were joined by
their families and enjoyed the
weekend camping, visiting and
eating at Greg and Brenda’s.
Congratulations to the couple.
The Sunday night dance had a
great crowd attend to enjoy the music
of the Country Versatiles. The crowd
enjoyed the cool comfort of the hall
until the lively dancing created some
extra heat for the crowd.

4-H Club looks to trivia event
By Johanna Blake
The third meeting of the Grey
Township 4-H Mosquito Bait was
held July 1 at the Menesetung
Bridge in Goderich. There are some
upcoming 4-H events: A “Go for the
Gold” competition on July 17,
which is a trivia competition
between teams of four. There is also
the Huron judging competition
coming up Aug. 13 in Seaforth.
We were told about Giant
Hogweed, a poisonous weed that
can grow up to 14 metres tall.
Members then began on their hike.
The Menesetung Bridge was
decorated with flags for Canada
Day. Members hiked the Sifto Loop
and then went onto the main trail to
the Tiger Dunlop tomb. Members
saw a wide variety of trees and
plants including poison ivy, catnip,
sycamore and sumac.
Members also saw one of the
largest trees in thea rea, a large Red
Oak that began growing in the mid-
1700s. It was three meters (nine
feet) around. Once the members
reached the Dunlop tomb, they
stopped for a snack.
After a break, the members made
their way back to the bridge. On the
way back, some of the members
found a Mulberry tree, which had
edible berries. The group arrived
back at the Menesetung Bridge and
closed the meeting with the 4-H
motto, “Learn to Do by Doing”.
The club then discussed the next
meeting which will take place on
July 20 at Falls Reserve
Conservation Area, Benmiller.
