Blyth Barons split matches against Zurich, Belmore
The Blyth Barons split a double
header in Huron County Fastball
League play last Friday evening at
the Blyth ballpark.
Trailing 9-1 after three innings in
the first game against the Zurich
Rangers, the Barons rallied to defeat
the visitors 11-9. In the second
contest against the Belmore
Stingers, the Barons ran out of gas as
they fell by score of 6-4.
Darcey Cook got things off on the
right foot in the opening game as he
hit an inside the park home run to
lead off the first inning.
The Rangers put five runners
across the plate in the top of the
second inning and added four more
runs in the third inning.
Blyth scored four times in the
bottom of the third inning and added
five more in the fifth inning and
wrapped up the scoring with a run in
the sixth – a solo home run by
Shawn Bromley.
Chris Stewart connected for a
three-run home run, and added a
single. Adam Cronin and Craig
Elliott rapped out two singles apiece
while single base hits were added by
Scott Lealess, Shawn Bromley,
Robb Finch and Steve Cook.
Darcey Cook started on the mound
for the Barons, with Adam Cronin
taking over in the third inning. Craig
Elliott pitched the seventh inning.
Veteran player Mike Bromley said
the comeback was capped by the
three-run home run by Chris Stewart
and the solo shot by Shawn Bromley.
“We had timely hitting,” he said.
“Adam Cronin came in and settled
down the pitching.
“It was a good team victory.”
In the second game of the evening,
the Stingers put four runners across
the plate in the top of the third inning
and then added two more in the fifth
inning.
Blyth scored two runs in the
bottom of the fourth and then put
two more runners across the plate in
the fifth inning.
Craig Elliott went the distance on
the mound for the Barons.
Scott Lealess paced the offence
with three base hits. Darcey Cook
had a double and single for the
Barons, with Chris Stewart hitting a
double. Shawn Bromley, Craig
Elliott and Mike Bromley each
rapped out a pair of singles. Adam
Cronin and Steve Cook had one hit
apiece.
Veteran player Mike Bromley said
the team had short bench for the
evening. “The guys played hard,” he
said. “We just ran out of gas.”
He indicated that Craig Elliott
pitched well and that Scott Lealess
was 3-4 at the plate.
The Barons were in Walton on
Tuesday for a game against the
Brewers. Blyth travels to
Sebringville on Wednesday for an
8:30 p.m. contest against the Junior
Sting. The next home game for the
Barons is July 19 when they host
the Brussels Tigers beginning at
7:30 p.m. at the Blyth ballpark.
Too much to handle
A double header was too much for the Blyth Barons who
bounced back to beat Zurich 11-9 but lost to Belmore 6-4.

Barons top Tigers in Brussels
When it comes to pitching, the
Blyth Barons have their own
diamond in the rough.
Adam Cronin tossed a six-hitter
last Wednesday evening, as the
Barons trumped the Brussels Tigers
4-1 in a Huron County Fastball
League contest played at the
Optimist ballpark in Brussels.
The Barons scored a run in the top
of the first inning and never looked
back.
Cronin had a shutout going until
the Tigers put a runner across
the plate in the bottom of the
seventh inning.
Chris Stewart paced the Blyth
offence as he connected for a
double and a single and drove
in three runs. Mike Bromley rapped
out a pair of singles and Mike
Haggitt contributed a single to the
win.
For the Tigers, Wade Stephenson
had a double and single while Ty
Sebastian connected for a double.
Single base hits were contributed by
Corey Campbell, Brian McArter and
Shawn Daw.
Cronin went the distance on
the mound for the Barons to earn
the victory. Daw started on the
mound for the Tigers and was
relieved by Sebastian.
Senior player Mike Bromley said
that Adam Cronin pitched a great
game. “Chris Stewart drove in three
runs, which really helped us,” he
said. “We had some timely hitting.”
According to Bromley, they had
two returning players – Mike
Haggitt and Chad Haggitt – playing
for the Barons. “They were a great
addition to the line-up as we were
short-manned,” he said.
Senior Tigers player, Jason
Kellington, said the Tigers tried hard
in the game.
“We are still a young team and we
are learning every game,” he said.
“We are doing well.”

The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club held its annual golf camp this
past week. The 34 children aged 6-
13 enjoyed a great week of fun and
friendship while learning the basic
fundamentals as well as some proper
golf etiquette. Instructors Don Bone,
Ed Daer and Maxine Robinson with
help from a few volunteers did
another stellar job with this great
group of kids.
The Tuesday ladies played for the
Conron championship this past
week with Aantje Robinson coming
out on top. The winner of the longest
putt went to Marilyn Layton.
Wednesday, July 3 the senior men
had 27 hit the links. Dan McBurney
shot a solid round of 37 to take home
both low net and low gross. Harry
George took home second while
Teeswater boy Ed Hofmann, for the
second straight week, finished in the
money in third place. Brian Carr was
longest putt winner with John
Muckler closest to the pin.
The Thursday night men had a
super turnout with 81 golfers on a
great golfing night. Don Edgar kept
up his great play firing a 37 for low
net. Neil Beiman had a hot putter
claiming two longest putt prizes as
well as Shaun Jolliffe, Ken Mathers
and Trevor Hopf. The winners of the
closest to the pin went to Leighton
Lynch and Mark Foxton while
hidden scores were taken home by
Barry Capling, Brian Carr, Vern
Logan , Bob Foxton and George
Oriold.
The monthly Friday night wing
night was another success and it was
great to see the scenic patio full.
Cheryl and the girls served up more
than 1,000 tasty wings.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
It was sure great to see all the
children at the course this past week
taking part in the golf clinic. Special
thanks to the kids, the volunteers
and all the golfers who gave up their
tee times. Hopefully someday these
children will be part of the future of
the club.
