(Photo submitted) Locals to downsize At the end of June the village said goodbye to Tom and Marjorie Duizer. Tom and Marjorie had lived all 49 years of their marriage in the village and their four children had attended Hullett Central Public School. Deciding it was time to downsize, the couple have taken up residence in Goderich. Although the village is sorry to see them go, they are wished only the best in the years ahead and we know they will keep their ties to the village and area. Their former home on Trueman Street is now home to Kevin Campbell and Lindsay Steinback and Morgan, Wyatt, Jackson and Braxton Campbell who moved in on the Canada Day weekend. More children for villagers to enjoy and watch grow. Welcome to you. We trust you will find life in Londesborough to your liking. Another of our own is making a life change of another kind. Andrea Hulley, daughter of Wayne and Ruth and granddaughter of Betty, is to be married on Saturday, July 20. Andrea was raised in Londesborough but has been semi- absent for a few years as she finished her post-secondary education and found herself a job. However the village offers congratulations and best wishes on this new phase of her life. If you would like to donate to a community gift for Andrea stop by the post office. At time of reporting Jack Lee is a patient in Clinton Hospital having suffered a significant episode on Saturday morning. Please keep both Jack and Helen in your prayers as they make plans for their future. Ladies of Londesborough United Church met in the church basement for their June meeting on Monday, June 24. They enjoyed fresh strawberries with ice cream and cookies. Later in the evening the ladies tested their baking knowledge with a ‘name that cake’ quiz. The women were treated to piano solos by Kiara Driscoll who played “Tiger Rag” and “Green Frog Hop”. Crystal Whyte reported that she had cleaned the cabin at Camp Menesetung and discovered some repair was necessary, particularly to the area where the old heater had been removed. Moreover she had purchased a large grass mat for the centre of the cabin. Crystal noted that in many of the cabins one or more bunks have been removed as per regulations of the Health Department. This means our cabin now has only six bunks for campers and one for the counsellor. This will surely impact the number of campers at the camp that can be accommodated over a summer and ultimately the finances of the camp as a whole. Gail Fraser of Clinton spoke to the ladies that evening about her work with Social Services of Huron County. She is the co-ordinator of the food advisors who volunteer forthe Health Unit. These food advisorsspeak to various groups in the county about healthy eating. They advise about nutrition for babies, seniors and those needing special diets – salt free, fat free, etc. The idea is to be proactive with diet and reduce medical emergencies and improve every day good health. As program co-ordinator for Social Services Gail works out of the Jacob Memorial Building on the Huronview property. One of the programs that she has been overseeing since 2006 is a community garden on a one acre lot behind the building. There is also a greenhouse connected to this project. Approximately 40 persons on social assistance each year work on this gardening program. Persons are referred to the ‘garden’ by their respective case workers as being likely to benefit from the experience. People who are a part of the garden work at all aspects from preparing the soil to planting, weeding and picking. Participants take the food home. Gail remarked that the participants also learn to preserve the produce. Everything from the gardens is used within the program. This referral is considered a job for these persons as they prepare for and seek full-time employment. Gail arranges for speakers and trainers to attend on the three ‘gardening’ days each week to assist with their moving on. A participant can only garden for one year. Participants come from all over Huron County and social services help them access a variety of services that will helpthem move forward with their lives.Participants now also have knowledge they can carry forward to make their diets healthier. Gail noted that she and the participants have learned a lot along the garden path. Now there are raised beds, teepees and climbing trellises. Excess produce is donated to food banks and soup kitchens throughout the county. Through research done by summer student, Nicole Fraser, social services has learned there are three other community gardens operated in different ways, one in Seaforth and two in Goderich. The plan is hopefully to share resources and knowledge. It was a most interesting and informative talk. 39. Point midway between E and SE 40. Indonesian islands 41. Afflicted 43. A way to soak 44.
