St. John Ambulance celebrates 30 years in Brussels
“Celebration, celebration …” I
don’t recall who wrote or sang the
song that repeats those words, but it
was the tune of the day here on
Saturday.
The conservation area was the
place to be for anyone ready to
celebrate the 30 years that St. John
Ambulance has served our area. Part
of the original Brigade Deb Trollope
and Betty Graber smiled many times
as memories of the early days of
hockey with Jim Garniss and Stewart
Parker were recalled. The need for
instructors was soon evident and
Doug Sholdice and Marlene
Richmond volunteered as well.
Names of all the former members
were read and more stories were
recalled. Huron-Bruce MP Ben
Lobb, Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa
Thompson, North Huron Reeve NeilVincent, Huron East CouncillorsFrank Stretton and Dave Blaney and
Chris Lee each brought their
thoughts of St. John and the benefit
to community here and worldwide.
Congratulations were offered from
St. John provincial and Hanover
level to Carol Henderson, the present
unit leader and the members of
today. They continue to offer their
skills at many of our community
events for our health and safety.
Meanwhile the Optimist Club was
busy getting ready for its 40th
anniversary party at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre.
In every club, part of the fun is
working and playing together and so
setting up the party Saturday
afternoon was once again a team
effort. Everyone knew the
importance of this evening, sharing
the history, celebrating the founding
members and reliving some of the
notable events. The decorations were
beautiful with purple and white
accents showcasing the ice sculpture
of the Optimist crest.
Friends of the Optimists came to
celebrate this milestone, to enjoy the
good food, listen to many great
stories and finally to boogy to the
music of Lulu’s Roadhouse Band. Agood reunion with folks ready andwilling to show their support for all
the good things the Optimist Club
has done. We each have an Optimist
story in our memory and smile at the
thought of today and the past 40
years. Well done and may your
membership continue to enjoy theirtime of service to community. As I think about all the good
things in our community, none
would be happening without
volunteers. If you’re not part of this
fun pastime, think about it. I’m sure
a volunteer position could be found
just for you. So make your life better byoffering to help our many
organizations who look after our
community so well. It will make
everybody happy. Take care of
yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

It was a quiet week around the
Brussels Legion Branch after a busy
long weekend. Congratulations to
the Brussels Optimist Club on
celebrating its 40th anniversary.
There were about nine members of
the Brussels Legion in attendance at
the event. Comrade Rick McDonald
delivered congratulatory remarks on
behalf of the Legion.
The one-by-one program has been
initiated by the Royal Canadian
Legion. The program has been
created to hopefully encourage and
promote membership in the Royal
Canadian Legion. Members of the
Branches who support the
application of a new member for a
Branch will have their name entered
into a draw for a chance to win a
prize of a holiday cruise. Your
chances of winning are increased
with every new member you recruit.
Your name will be entered again
into the draw for each member you
recruit. Dominion Command is
hoping that if every current member
of the Legion recruits a new
member, the membership will
double and the Royal Canadian
Legion will continue to be the
largest service organization in
Canada.
Comrades Eric Ross and Bob
Richardson participated in District
Seniors Golf in Port Elgin on the
weekend. They finished fourth in the
seniors and will participate in
provincial plan in September in
Blenheim. congrats to Eric and Bob.
The food booth at the Tigers
Fastball Tournament is around the
corner at the end of the month.
Volunteers are needed to work a
shift. If every Comrade works one
shift, it is not a lot of work for
others. Please call the Branch and
speak to Sandra about times
available.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
Tigers help Pre-Mite team hone their skills
The Brussels Tigers of the Huron
County Fastball League took some
time out of their busy schedule last
Friday night to pass on some of their
baseball wisdom.
Organized by Brussels Pre-Mite
coach Heather Dunbar, the team of
young baseball hopefuls practiced
with their adult counterparts on
Friday night just hours before the
Tigers played the Wroxeter
Royals and won by a score of 12-5.
In an interview with The Citizen
on Monday, Dunbar praised the
Tigers for their work with the
children, saying they were great
with the young would-be baseball
players.
Dunbar said she has some real
“hardcore” baseball fans on her
team, so to play alongside the Tigers
was a pretty special moment for
them, she said.
The Tigers helped the young team
with their hitting fundamentals,
fielding and throwing, showing them
the proper way to execute the basics
of baseball.
“Shawn Daw took turns pitching
to all the kids,” Dunbar said, adding
that other players on the team were
working with the Pre-Mite batters
ensuring that they stood correctly in
the batter’s box, putting them in the
right position to hit the ball.
“They were all really great with
the kids, they were really involved,”
Dunbar said.
The Pre-Mites’ time with the
Tigers didn’t end there, however, as
the team stayed for the Tigers’
contest with Wroxeter, even making
up their own cheer for their village
heroes.
Dunbar says the experience was a
really great one for the Pre-Mite
team and that there has been talk
about a Brussels Minor Ball day
where the Tigers and a handful of
other Brussels baseball teams will
all play on the same day with the
same level of interactivity.
“I was just really impressed with
all of the Tigers,” Dunbar said.
“They really stepped up.”
Passing along some wisdom
The Brussels Tigers welcomed special guests to a recent home game. On Friday night, the
Brussels Pre-Mite team joined the Tigers to practice before the game. (Vicky Bremner photo)
