The Blyth Festival was named runner-up for the coveted Premier’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts, presented June 28 at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. The Premier’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts recognize outstanding achievements by Ontario’s artists and arts organizations. The awards are open to artists and arts organizations engaged in any professional arts practice in Ontario. The award recognizes an organization involved in producing or distributing work by professional artists or creative content producers selected from five short-listed finalists. The Blyth Festival was one of six organizations in Ontario nominated in the Arts Awards Organization category. “I am so pleased that the province recognized the outstanding work of the Blyth Festival,” said Lisa Thompson, Huron-Bruce MPP. “I would like to thank the board of directors, production team, the incredible actors and actresses, generous sponsors, General Manager Deb Sholdice, and Artistic Director Peter Smith for working so hard to not only put on great theatre productions in Blyth, but productions that elicit provincial recognition.” The Blyth Festival, which showcases Canadian works, is in its 39th season and has six original shows featured this theatre season. Dear Johnny Deere, Beyond the Farm Show, Yorkville: The Musical, Garrison’s Garage, Prairie Nurse and Falling: A Wake. “We are so lucky to have such great theatre alive and well in rural Ontario,” said Thompson. “Everyone involved with the Blyth Festival should be proud of this incredible accomplishment, and I encourage people to see a show in Blyth this summer.” For more information, visit www.blythfestival.com Festival namedrunner-up for Premier’s award Network ADVERTISE ACROSS ONTARIO OR ACROSS THE COUNTRY! Joanne Doherty, right, charity co-ordinator and department manager in Walmart in Goderich was at the school’s final day of classes this school year to present the school with a cheque for any capital projects it has on the horizon. Doherty presented students with a cheque for $3,000, half of which was donated by Walmart and the other half of which was raised by the school. In addition, she also gave students an additional $524.20, profits from a fundraising barbecue that was held in front of the store on Father’s Day weekend. Accepting the cheque on behalf of the school are, clockwise from top left: teacher Sue Barnett, principal Shawn Allen, Doherty, Shelby Hamp, Bailey Hamp and Paige Gibbons.
