Branderhorst pleased with class’s ‘track meet’

GO!
This is it, the moment we have
been training for over the last nine
years. Welcome to the final track
meet for Team 2013! We have been
training hard over the last nine years.
We have faced many challenges and
setbacks along the way, but with the
help of our earthly coaches and our
Heavenly coach we have persevered
to the final meet at Huron Christian
School achieving many personal
bests along the way.
When we arrived in September of
2003 we were greeted by head coach
Mr. Bos who warned us that our
training would be vigorous and we
would be challenged with many
obstacles along the way. But if we
remained focused and relied on the
‘Rule Book’ given to us by our
Heavenly coach, we would succeed.
Our first meet began with coach
Soer leading the way. She worked
hard training us to be the best we
could be and helping us overcome
our fears, anxieties and insecurities.
Early on our team formed great
relationships and even had some
early romances in our first year;
playing boyfriend/girlfriend on the
hill. Where did we come up with
these ideas? This year was all about
stretching and warming up. We
didn’t know it then but the next year
we would start our race!
The training continued into our
Grade 1 year. The hard work began;
practices and races every single day.
Miss Horneman was our coach and
encouraged us to work hard. Our
efforts were rewarded with nutrition
breaks that included yummy
Werther’s candies when our spelling
was correct.
Grade 2 was a bumpy year for our
team. We were split into two and
began training separately. Half the
class joined Mr. Huls’ Grade 3 team
while the other half joined Miss
Bechtel’s Grade 1 team. It was not
an easy year for the Grade 1⁄2 team.
The coaches were plagued with
illness and the team endured not one
but four different coaches
throughout the course of the year.
Our third lap around we were
coached by Mr. Huls. This year had
a stench that I don’t think anyone is
particularly fond of – guinea pigs.
But since we were little Grade 3
students and Mr. Huls was, well, Mr.
Huls, the smell didn’t faze us and the
pigs were the best pets ever. We had
many memories with Vanilla and
Mocha. The Vanilla pee rock, and
bringing them home on the
