The early weather for the last week of June and of school, was hot, hot, hot. A saying I have heard said by some old farmers’ friends is “it’s so hot you can hear the corn growing”, and grow it did. Many fields that I did not think would make “knee high by July” jumped a foot with the hot, humid weather. Then the rain came. Earlier in the week, small amounts of rain fell around our area, but many areas around the Walton/Brussels area had a lot more than us. That all changed on Thursday evening. The rain started late Thursday evening and about four-and-a-half inches of rain fell by supper time on Friday evening. The water washed over the road on Moncrieff Road and swept mud and grass down into our wheat field. The rain or maybe windflattened many area fields of wheat, some a lot worse than others. Stillnot as bad as what Alberta has suffered through. Nasty weather for the farmers’ market this past week. The pouring rain kept the crowd away I’m sure, but I could hear the entertainment playing on for those who were around. Let’s hope for no rain for future markets. The rest of the Canada Day weekend enjoyed fairly decent weather. Saturday was nice and so was Sunday. Monday, Canada Day, was cooler, windy and grey, but we hope everyone had a good day! Jim Armstrong and his son Robert from Colbourne, flew from Brussels to a friend’s grass airstrip south of Lansing, Michigan in Jim’s 1949 Luscombe aircraft a few weeks ago. The weather was perfect both going and returning home. They visited Kyle Bradford, a retired Pan American Boeing 747 Captain. Kyle is 85 years old and had just completed his third Pietenpol Aircamper, the same home built aircraft Jim and Robert built. Jim and Robert spent many hours filling out online all the requirements to cross the border in a light aircraft. This is all since 911, but the extra red tape was worth it, as they had a wonderful trip and really enjoyed seeing Kyle and his family and seeing the 85-year-old flying his new Pietenpol. How could I have forgotten the special birthday of a special little lady of Brussels? Elunid McNair celebrated her 99th birthday last week. Elunid’s daughter Myra arrived with her family to enjoy the day and have dinner together. Good friend Jean Bewley also enjoyed the day with them. Happy birthday Elunid. We enjoyed dinner at Rick’s brother Neil’s cottage last week before he left. He had brought Aunt Marg Stevens from London for a few days stay and visit. We enjoyed catching up with her family news and her interests in London. We also enjoyed a drop-in visit by Linda Gingerich. She was staying inBayfield for a week because herdaughter Andrea was here from B.Cat a conference in Bayfield. Andrea is a naturopathic doctor. She had pictures of her daughter Lisa and husband Denis and their two little girls Jocelyn and Aubree. The Johnson sisters enjoyed their annual sisters trip last week. The sisters, Leona Armstrong, Helen MacLean, St. Catherines and Doris McKinley of Truro, N.S. gathered and toured the Colbourne area. They enjoyed visiting friends and relatives in Colbourne, Almonte and Belleville. They visited a little church out in the country called Rosetta Church, where their grandmother played the organ many years ago. They also took side trips to Merrickville and Appleton. It’s wonderful that the sisters continue this yearly tradition. Saturday started off rather grey, but the day turned out quite wonderful. It was wonderful because it was the chosen day of Cindy McCallum and Paul Kerr to wed at the Blyth Emergency Services Training Centre in Blyth. The couple married in front of 30 family members and closest friends before enjoying a dinner provided by the Williamsons of Seaforth. The party continued at the cabin at the farm of Paul and Dianne McCallum with more guests arriving to wish the couple well. Congratulations to Cindy and Paul. Congratulations to Blaine McCutcheon and Debra Hamilton who were married at their home on Canada Day. It was a cool and windy day, but everyone had a wonderful time in the tent! Congratulations to Jack and Audrey Cardiff on celebrating their 60th anniversary. They hosted a wonderful party at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. It was a full house I’m told with many family and friends in attendance. Celebrating birthdays to finish the month of June includes Nora Humphries, Larry Kale, Stephen Todd, Ken McCallum, Jennifer Rea,Sandy Terpstra, Kevin Huether andCaden Lee. Kicking off July andcelebrating Canada Day was Erin Bolger Crawford, Logan Kuntz Dube, Linkin McCallum and Julie Wharton. July continues with Dianne Baan, Sherri McLachlan Taylor, Craig Baan, Merton Hackwell, Jeffrey Linton, Ken Pethick, Michael Ryan, Hope Williamson, Burt Lobb, AllisonStevenson and Jonathon Blake.Happy birthday to all. Celebrating Canada The Brussels Farmers’ Market held some special events to celebrate Canada Day on the Friday of the long weekend. Aside from musical entertainment, there was also face painting by volunteers like Sue Haskins, left. Sue is shown here painting her daughter Celena Haskins’ face.
