Wingham Hitmen skunk Walton Brewers in 4-0 loss
A first-inning double by Darryl
Houston, was the only hit the Walton
Brewers managed last Tuesday, as
they fell 4-0 to the Wingham Hitmen
in Huron County Fastball League
play at the Walton ballpark.
Not only did one of the best
pitchers in the league, Jason Daw,
allow just the one hit, he struck out
14. Scott McDonald went the
distance on the mound for the
Brewers.
Wingham put one run across the
plate in the first inning, added two
more in the third inning and
concluded the scoring with a single
run in the fifth inning.
Veteran player Matt Shortreed said
Wingham had timely hitting. “We
couldn’t get anything going tonight,”
he said.
The Brewers were in Sebringville
on June 23 and were handed a 6-4
setback by the Junior Sting.
The Brewers were in Zurich on
Tuesday. The Brewers travel to
Wroxeter on Sunday for a 2 p.m.
contest against the Royals. Next
home game for the Brewers is
Tuesday when they host the Blyth
Barons, beginning at 8 p.m. at the
Walton ballpark.
The Barons were in Fullarton on
June 23 and posted a 12-5 decision
over the A’s. The Barons were in
Brussels last night (Wednesday) for
a game against the Tigers. Next
home game for the Barons is Friday
when they play a double-header.
They go up against the Zurich
Rangers at 7:30 p.m. and then
tangle with the Belmore Stingers at 9
p.m.
The Brussels Tigers were in
Goderich on June 24 and recorded a
5-0 decision over the Grizzlies.
The Tigers played host to the
Blyth Barons last night (Wednesday)
and then host the Wroxeter Royals
on Friday, beginning at 8:30
p.m. at the Optimist ball park in
Brussels.

Stay off the tracks
Individually and as a team the Walton Brewers got bowled over last week as they were marked
and taken out by the Wingham Hitmen in a 4-0 loss. Previously, the Brewers didn’t fare much
better against the Sebringville Junior Sting when, on June 23, they were bested 6-4. Next the
Brewers will host the Blyth Barons on July 9. (Jim Brown photo)
Central Huron councillors
reviewed a comprehensive report
June 11 during their Committee of
the Whole session after Central
Huron Fire Chief Steve Cooke told
council spiralling costs associated
with insurance might necessitate an
end to the decades’-old practice of
giving provincial award-winning
sports teams a victory lap around
town care of a fire engine.
While Cooke had earlier reported
concerns with regard to both
insurance and safety, given there
aren’t seatbelts on the engine,
councillors said the tradition should
continue.
“I fully supported victory rides.
I’m an advocater of it,” said
Councillor Brian Barnim, adding
there are risks to anything. “I think
a victory ride is something they [the
youth] will not forget.”
Mayor Jim Ginn is open to
discussion on rules relating to the
victory rides, but he wants the
practice to continue.
“I think it is something kids will
always remember,” he said, adding
since the older engine is used for the
rides, there aren’t any worries about
damage to equipment. “Just to
completely do away with it is
wrong,” he said.
Councillor Dan Colquhoun also
supported keeping the rides alive.
“I made it through,” he said in
reference to the approximate 12
times he has been on the truck with
a winning team.
He added, “Kids are a little
smarter nowadays,” and less likely
to display worrisome behaviour on
the engine.
Deputy-Mayor Dave Jewitt stood
alone in his opposition to the
practice.
“My heart says yes this is
something we should be doing, but
as a councillor, I am very much risk
adverse,” he said, adding allowing
the practice to go on also puts the
driver at risk. “It’s a great, great
thing,” said Jewitt. “I wish I could
support it, but I can’t.”
The fire chief noted other safety-
related concerns remain, including a
weight limit on the engine. He said
perhaps an age limit needs to be in
place.
“I don’t know how you can put a
limit on it,” said Barnim.
Council agreed to turn it back to
staff for recommendations on how
best to craft a policy that will allow
for the continuation of the rides.
“My recommendation is that it is
to continue,” said Ginn, though he
added the where and when could
change to, for example, only allow
for engine rides during annual
parades.
