When you
need to get
the job done
~ Call us!
Party held for retiring principal Frank StrettonO Canada. We are so blessed to becelebrating Canada Week, Just as weare. We live in a beautiful land fromone edge right to the others, our
homeland changes with each turning
in the road or canoe. We have
ancient rocks from Gros Morne
orange, to Thunder Bay pink,
granite, as well as many of the other
subdued colours and compositions,
even our grey, white and black
variety, pretty treasures at every turn,
across Canada. Our water is the envy of manyworldwide and something we needto get a better grasp of is the fragility
of our supply. From thundering falls
to our Great Lakes and the thousands
of small lakes, peaceful rivers and
bubbling brooks. We are well
hydrated and the scenery that this
water helps produce lets Canada
make its mark on the world as a
place to see and paint.
Food and freedom, we seem to
take for granted. Canada is very
good at both of these. We need to
keep alert and be aware of the many
challenges that could interfere with
our very safety. Integrity is not a
worldwide trait, even when we know
it should be.
Our history of co-operation,
respect and fairness are things we
need to be very proud of, our people
are seen worldwide as pleasant andreasonable most of the time. But theimage of Canada, and us inparticular, is one that this week and
for our lives we should ponder and
appreciate. We live in a great land –
Oh Canada!
In 1973 a young keen man started
his teaching career in our area. In
2013 at school’s end Frank Stretton
retired. Since 1982 special education
became his interest and over the
years Frank grew into his last
position with the Avon Maitland
District School Board. As System
Principal – Special Education and
knowledge of the area, since he
taught or was principal in many of
the schools his experience and
wisdom was well used to the benefit
of our children. The old Brussels
Public School – now Business
Centre was the spot for a well
planned surprise party (and it
worked). Family, friends and
colleagues celebrated his years in
education. It was a fitting spot as
Frank was principal here in the final
y ears. So memories were shared,
laughs given and received and
friendships cemented as
refreshments were shared. Frank’s
dedication to Avon Maitland’s
students earned him an Excellence in
Public Education Award this year.
Now onto golf and ball, travel and
family time as you enjoy yourmemories and all the perks of havingsix Saturdays in a week. Good workFrank.
Happy July, take care.

Happy Canada Day to everyone
with hopes that a good weekend was
enjoyed by all.
The Brussels Legion Branch held
the usual executive and then general
meeting on Tuesday evening. There
were eight executive members
present for Comrade Jo-Ann’s first
meeting as president. They discussed
the successful cemetery decoration
service and any improvements that
could be made. It was discussed that
personal contact be made with the
various churches regarding their lists
of deceased and that a representative
from the church be present for the
service to read the names.
The group discussed the proposed
washroom renovations which was
approved at the general meeting. The
tenders from the contractor, plumber
and flooring company were all
approved. The air conditioner in the
kitchen is too small and a larger
BTU unit is required to cool the area.
A new larger one will be purchased.
There are two athletes heading to
Sudbury and cash donations will be
made to each of them. The
Optimists’ 40th anniversary is July 6
and there will be seven Legion
members attending. Committee
reports were heard from Nevada,
House, Canteen, track and field,
catering and fish fry events. There
are two fry events this weekend. The
schedule sheet is up for the food
booth at the Tigers fastball
tournament and Comrades are asked
to stop in and sign up for a shift.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 11 tables of players. Winners
were: first, Ruth and Flo, 78; second,
Mae and Lillian Appleby, 76; third,
Len and Betty Archambault, 74; lone
hands, Joanne Carter and Dorothy
Carter; low, Shirley Gilder and
Dianne Weber, 40.
The Sunday night dance was
cancelled for the holiday weekend.
The fish fry crew went to Family
Paradise Campground on Sunday to
feed nearly 140 campers. The
helpers included Ken Bird, Mike
Dauphin, Rick and Jo-Ann
McDonald and a friend of the Birds
- Marcel from the camp. Good job
everyone.
The usual trip to Lucknow Legion
for the Canada Day fish fry was
handled by the ladies’ crew.
Handling the duties of cooking
included Lisa Glanville, Sandra
Josling, Deb Cann, Jo-Ann
McDonald, Judy Lee, Catrina
Josling and Sharon Robbins. The
ladies have a lot of fun and bring
along a variety of things to taste test
in the deep fryers.
Keeping cool, Canadian style
Rene Richmond knew how to show her Canadian pride and
keep both dry and cool during the odd weather on Friday at
the Brussels Farmers’ Market. The market had special
Canada Day-themed celebrations for the long weekend.
