Walton to host match
Over 250 attend plowing celebration in Seaforth
Our area has had its share of good
and bad weather, but after hearing
and seeing the weather that Alberta
and the cities of Calgary, High River
and Canmore has received – no
complaints here. We have family in
Calgary and they have family in both
of the other areas. Our nephew and
wife and family’s home was not
flooded, but they have not been able
to go to work in the downtown area.
The school their child attends is
closed due to flooding, so early
summer holidays. Our niece and
husband had just moved from a
downtown condo and it was flooded
and was without hydro. They
report if they had been there, their
truck would have been submerged
and ruined. They had moved
only a few weeks ago and live on
higher ground which was not
affected. Some of them can work
from home, but some of them are
just unable to get to work until they
open up the downtown area again.
We are happy to know they are all
well and are coping with the
upheavel.
We are pleased to hear that Sarah
Stephenson is now a resident at
Huronlea. We hope she enjoys
meeting her old friends again and is
settling in well.
We also hear that Goldie
Stevenson is a new resident at
Huronlea. We hope she settles in and
renews old acquaintances from the
area.
We understand Lynn and
Annabelle Hoy have reason to
celebrate. Lynn celebrated his 80th
birthday last week and now is
celebrating 50 years of marriage.
Congratulations to both of them.
There was a great turnout for the
Grey Township firefighters’breakfast on Sunday morning. It wasa lovely morning and the usual
smiling face of Stew Steiss greeted
the crowd. Good job folks!
The Walton Raceway held two
days of practice. They had a good
turnout for both days.
The Moncrieff Hall had only a
small crowd for their first night of
cards. They had three tables of
players. Winners were: low lady,
Joanne Machan; low man, Adrian
Verstoep; high lady, Helen Dobson;
high man, Gord Machan; most lone
hands, Ann Cooper and Jim Cooper.
Organizer Elaine Smith reports that
they hope to hold the euchres the
second and fourth Fridays of the
month. With only $2 for admission,
everyone can afford to come out for
a night of cards and fun. The group
also enjoys a potluck lunch
following the night’s play.
The news is good news for the
Walton area. The Walton location
and the farm of Jack Ryan was
announced as the location for the
2017 International Plowing Match.
The announcement was made at the
Rural Celebration of Plowing event
held in Seaforth on the weekend.
The Ryan family was all in
attendance, along with the many
friends and neighbours who will be
contributing land and barns to the
event and were introduced. The
Huron County Plowmen’s
Association also announced that the
chairperson for the Match is Jacquie
Bishop. Congratulations to her. She
is a very capable woman who will do
an excellent job and it will be a
pleasure to work alongside her. Now
the work of forming committees will
begin in earnest and a website will
soon be up and running for folks to
volunteer in areas they are interested
in helping.
The event on Saturday was also a
chance for many people to
congratulate Paul Dodds and Kevin
Haney on winning the Canadian
Plowing Championships in B.C. last
month. There were about 250 people
in attendance for the event and it was
a great afternoon for Huron County
and the Walton/Brussels area.
The old adage of the corn being“knee high by July” has only a fewmore days to grow. We took pictures
last year around the first of July and
the corn was almost head high in
places. There are some fields that are
doing not bad, but not as well as last
year. No year is ever the same in the
world of farming.
Neil McDonald has been home
from Vancouver for a couple of
weeks. He was here to see how the
addition was going on his cottage.
He worked on his property and was
able to visit with some family and
friends. He went to the Hamilton
Tigercats game with his brother Rick
in Guelph. The Hamilton team is
playing its games at the University
of Guelph stadium this year while
the new stadium is being built in
Hamilton. He went to visit with
friends in London, including
Margery Huether at Parkwood. Hereports she is working very hard inher rehab program and is hoping to
get home by late July.
John and Steven Huether made a
weekend trip to Florida. They left
Thursday and drove down to the
home Margery has had in Florida.
She is giving up the place and they
retrieved the belongings needing to
come back to Seaforth. They
brought back her vehicle as well.
They returned again on Saturday.
Welcome back.
Celebrating birthdays this past

many beautiful sites to choose
from,” McGavin added.
In an interview after the
announcement, McGavin said his
grandfather, Gordon, who won a
Canadian championship himself in
1926, would be proud to hear
Walton would be hosting such an
important installment of the IPM.
“He would be proud of this area,”
McGavin said.
Bishop implored those in
attendance to join one of a handful
of committees being formed for the
match’s planning stages. She also
announced that Brussels Agri
Services would be sponsoring the
logo and slogan contests for the
IPM.
The contest is now open with a
deadline for submissions of Aug. 1,
2013. The logo must be submitted in
either JPG or EPS format with a
limit of two submissions from each
entrant. E-mail submissions to
ipmruralexpo2017@gmail.com
The winning submissions will
take home $200 for the winning
logo design and $200 for the
winning slogan.
The 100th anniversary of the IPM
is being celebrated in Perth County
this September, headlined by the
match, but due to several
matches lost during war years, 2017
will play host to the actual 100th
IPM.
