Blyth Barons shut down as Daw strikes out 12
The Blyth Barons went up against
one of the best pitchers in the Huron

Hitmen allowed just one hit and
struck out 12 as the Hitmen bested
the Barons 10-1.
Mike Bromley was the only
successful batter against Daw.

with a walk and advanced to second

on the mound for the Barons.
Ken Hogg hit a two-run homerun
in the second inning for the Hitmen
and added a double.

Sunday for a game against the A’s.

when they travel to Brussels for an
8:30 p.m. contest against the Tigers.

July 5 when they play a double-

The Wingham Golf and Curling

week with open arms. Like most
golf courses in the area the club is
looking forward to more ideal
golfing conditions.
Tuesday, June 18 the ladies had
close to 40 gals hit the links
throughout the day. Stacey Boyd
was winner of the longest putt while
Sylvia Pewtress took home the
closest to the pin award.
The Wednesday senior men saw
24 golfers on a great golfing
morning. Bill Brown went away
with low gross followed by Ross
Peacock with second and Doug
Vanderwoulde, third. Ray Walker
was winner of closest to the pin with
Ed Daer taking low net shooting 39
as well as longest putt.
The Thursday night men had 74
golfers out to enjoy a beautiful night
for a round of golf and a few bubbles
on the patio. Dave Gamble was the
big winner for the night with a
closest-to-the-pin award, longest
putt as well as tying Don Edgar for
low net with a solid 37. Other
winners were closest to the pin Russ
Danbrook and Doug Vanderwoulde
and longest putts Bill Kerr, Trevor
Hopf, Doug Long and Wayne
Gordon. The hidden score winners
were Jason Goodall, Scott Helder,
James Elphick and Ken Mathers.
Saturday, June 22 the club was
pleased to host a group of golfers
from the Driftwood campground.
The 40 golfers enjoyed a nine-hole
alternate-shot scramble.
This coming week from July 1 – 5
the club is looking forward to almost
50 smiling children hit the course
as the annual golf camp will be
held.

A tough loss
Pitcher Jason Daw of the Wingham Hitmen just wouldn’t let up during a recent match between
the Hitmen and the Blyth Barons. Daw held the hometown heroes to a single hit and earned
12 strikeouts as the Hitmen destroyed Blyth 10-1. Chris Stewart of the Barons was walked and,
after a sacrifice fly from Shawn Bromley, Mike Bromley singled to earn the RBI. The Barons
next take on the Brussels Tigers on July 3 and then will host the Zurich Rangers and the
Belmore Stingers in a double-header in Blyth on July 5. (Jim Brown photo)
Brewers trump Wroxeter 11-2
The Walton Brewers bounced
back in a big way in Huron County
Fastball League play last week.
After losing to the Goderich
Grizzlies on June 10, the Brewers
scored an 11-2 decision over the
Wroxeter Royals last Tuesday.
The offence started in the first
inning as Barry Young smacked a
grand slam home run to give the
Brewers a 4-0 lead early. Walton
added a single run in the second
inning, put four more across the
plate in the third inning and scored
two more in fourth inning to mercy
the Royals in five innings.
Wroxeter scored their two runs in
the top of the fifth inning.
Scott McDonald went the distance
on the mound for the Brewers,
recording eight strike outs.
Jeff Smith rapped out a pair of
singles, with McDonald getting a
double and receiving a pair of walks.
Also getting two walks were Darryl
Houston, Blaine Marks and Kevin
Murray. Young had a single to go
with his home run. Scott Cox rapped
out a single.
Veteran player Paul Dolmage said
the team was able to bounce back in
a big way after getting clobbered by
the Grizzlies the week before.
“Younger [Barry Young] got
things going with his grand slam
home run in the first inning,” he
said. “It was a good night to get a
hit.”
He stated that Scott McDonald
pitched well.
The Brewers were scheduled to
play the Sebringville Sting on
Sunday evening and hosted the
Wingham Hitmen on Tuesday.
Walton travels to Zurich on Tuesday,
July 2 for an 8:30 p.m. contest
against the Rangers.
