Megan Lee, daughter of Dave and
Rosie Lee of Blyth, is working with
her husband, Joe, to help build a
school and a medical centre in
Kenya through the Niall Mellon
Township Trust.
As part of wanting to help out, the
couple is hosting a barbecue in Blyth
to help raise funds for the
organization.
Set for July 6 at Blyth Lions Park
from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., dinner will be
served from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and
consist of a “Kinburn-style” chicken
barbecue. The event will feature live
entertainment with “The Irish Guys”
a Toronto-based band, raffles,
games, a silent auction and more.
While they are running small
fundraisers in their current home
area of Toronto, Lee said that
home to her is Huron County and
both she and her husband visit there
often.
“The big reason we are coming
back is we are very much connected
to Blyth and Huron county because
almost my entire family is still
there,” she said. “I have a big
network there and we’re home so
often that I still have those
connections.”
Lee said you can take the girl out
of Huron County, but not Huron
County out of the girl, and that she
knows the community is helpful and
supportive and hopes to see that
again.
The trust is an organization based
in Ireland. Through it, Lee and her
husband will travel to Kenya and
begin construction of the school in
October of this year. This will be the
second time they’ve worked with the
organization.
“I always said I wanted to do
charity work abroad,” Lee explained.
“Last year, I decided it was the year
to do it. I started researching trips
and locations to try and figure out
where to go and then Joe brought
this to me.”
The organization fit what Lee
wanted to do perfectly.
“This group is exactly what I’ve
looked for,” she said. “With some
organizations, you work for a few
days then visit the nation after that, I
wanted to work the entire time.”
She said that she wanted that more
manual, more meaningful kind of
trip because, as she put it, she and
her husband lead good lives.
“We both have great jobs,” she
said. “We have a great life, but we’ve
travelled a lot and seen some horrific
things, so we want to share our
blessings with others now.”
Part of wanting to share those
blessings, according to Lee, is where
she was raised.
“I grew up in Huron County and,
when that happens, you just see
people helping each other everyday,” she said. “It’s ingrained in you.I wanted to try and help spread that
same idea abroad.”
Last year the organization had a
trip to South Africa that Lee and her
husband joined.
“We travelled with the
organization and found out that they
were in their 10th year of building
houses in South Africa,” she said.
“They have had 100,000 people find
homes through the 20,000 houses
they built there. In that year, we built
160 houses in seven days. They
announced that year, however, that
they would be moving on to a
different country and ended up in
Kenya.
“We’re going to build schools and
healthcare facilities there to try and
help keep people healthy,” she said.
“I feel education is really the way to
go with opportunities like this.”
With the change from homes to
schools, Lee said her appreciationand involvement with the projectincreased.
“When they said they were
changing over from homes to
schools, I knew I would keep going
with the project,” she said. “I feel
education is the way to go. You
know, the whole teach a man how to
fish adage is completely true. We
didn’t decide to go to Kenya, we just
decided to help out.”
The organization was built by
tradespeople and, according to Lee,
there are still more than 60 per cent
