A tale of two banners
Two different styles of banners were put up early Monday morning by North Huron Township
Public Works employees including the director of Public Works Kelly Church (on the left in both
pictures). The banners were funded by the Blyth Business Improvement Association (BIA) and
funded entirely through the organization. The installation of the banners represents more than
a year’s worth of work hammering out the final construction and design of the items. (Denny

Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on a very warm
Sunday, June 23 was Lavern Clark.
Ushering were Laurie Sparling and
Doug Whitson. Floyd Herman was
music director and Connor Brooks
ran the power point.
Pastor Sandra Cable welcomed
everyone to church and drew
attention to the announcements
printed in the bulletin and scrolling
on the power point. Special mention
was that the Sunday school would
be taking part in the Streetfest on
July 27 and that a Sunday School
superintendent is still needed. The
call to worship was said
responsively with the singing of the
refrain, “Come In, Come In and Sit
Down.”
The two hymns, “Come All You
People” and “Lord, Prepare Me to
be a Sanctuary” were sung. The
opening prayer was said
responsively followed by the
singing of verse one and three of
“As the Deer Pants for Water” -
Psalm 42.
The children were asked to come
to front for their story time. Pastor
Cable had a jar of beads. She asked
the children what was different
about the beads? They were
different colours and different
shapes and put together they make a
very pretty bracelet. She told the
children that we are like the beads,
we come in different colours and
different sizes and shapes, but in
God’s eyes we are all the same no
matter what we look like. When we
are put together we are all part of
God’s family. The children and
congregation repeated a prayer.
Floyd Herman gave a short history
of the anthem, “The Wonder of It
All” by George Beverly Shae, a
gospel singer. The scripture was
from Galatians 3: 23-29.
Pastor Cable’s message to the
congregation was “Make Over”. We
often see makeovers on TV and also
in magazines. The people doing the
makeovers look for people who are
not satisfied with the way they look
and want a makeover. Often the way
we look shows the way we feel. In
the scripture Paul understands how
the people felt and dressed. When
we are baptized into Christ, this is
like a makeover. Paul tells us that
God sees us differently. We trust our
lives to God and we are all children
of God no matter what colour or
shape. God believes in us and we
should believe in Him. We are called
to love one another, respect one
another and we are all equal.
Being children of God this
makeover will transform us both
In the day of adversity, consider!
(George Mylne, “Lessons for the Christian’s Daily Walk” 1859)
“In the day of adversity, consider!”Ecclesiastes 7:14
In your adversity, consider: That you deserve it all! That, had you nothing but
adversity, it only were your due! That every moment free from trouble, is a mercy!
That had the full curse been poured on you--your life would be nothing but sorrow
and vexation!
Consider that God afflicts you for your profit--to bring your sins to mind, and lead
you to the Cross. Believer, God chastens you in love, to make you a partaker of His
holiness. (Hebrews 12:10) How often have you forgotten Him! But He never forgets
you--and thus He chastens you.
Consider, how much you live for the world--how little you live for the Lord!
Consider how earthly, sensual, and devilish is your nature! Consider your thoughts-
-how vain! Consider your service--how unprofitable! Consider, then, God’s love in
chastening you.
Are you in sickness--then consider your many days of former health--all
undeserved by you! Consider your many helps in trouble, God’s presence, and His
grace--all undeserved by you!
In sleepless nights, consider how many nights you have slept soundly and sweetly-
-all undeserved by you! Consider Him, who gives you songs in the night--all
undeserved by you!
In poverty, consider how all your former needs have been supplied--food, clothing,
lodging, and so many comforts--all undeserved by you!
Have you incurred the loss of sight or hearing; loss of limbs, or power of using
them? Consider, then, your former powers; how much enjoyment you have had in
seeing, hearing, moving, handling--all undeserved by you!
O tried believer, consider, then, that your afflictions are light--and they are but for
a moment. They are all ordered in divine wisdom, tenderness, and love! Consider
Jesus! what sufferings He endured--all for unworthy you! Then faint not, nor be
weary, but consider your “eternal weight of glory”--glory “that far outweighs” all
yours woes--glory, all undeserved by you!
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet
inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles
are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all! So we fix our eyes
not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what
is unseen is eternal!” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
