St. John Ambulance celebrating 30 years in BrusselsSix months and Christmas is over,we’ve spent the month of June, halfof 2013 now over and done. That
could be depressing or wonderful
depending on what you gained from
those six months. So now as you
look at each remaining week just
think of all the new things to try, new
food to eat, new ideas to
tackle, just think about the
possibilities.
Grade 8 students this week are ourexamples of possibilities. Youngadults ready to take on the next level
of education. Ceremonies of
graduation let them, their parents
and teachers look back to see the
changes in each graduate.
Personalities develop, friendships
begun and talents and gifts
uncovered – the changes are
wonderful and only the beginning.
Speeches, dinners, awards, receptions, certificates and dancesare part of the memories the students
will take as they head toward their
many and future goals.
Congratulations.
Surprise parties are always fun, so
when Verne got Mary Heise to the
Listowel Golf Course on Sunday,
she was a good example of stunned
surprise. Perhaps because, this was a
bit early and the grandkids did a
great job oN the secret, she was
taken right in. School friends, work
friends, cousins, brothers, children
and grandchildren enjoyed an
afternoon of old pictures, (sorry
Mary), refreshments and of course
cake, and just being together with
family. So even if it’s early, Happy
Birthday Mary.
Our complaints of weather had
better be few this week as we watch
the aftermath of the water in Alberta.
To see the strength of the rivers and
the volume of water and its depth on
the news, we can only wonder at the
force of nature. Where do the people
go, what will the kids do and who
will help them get the mud out of
their kitchen. I guess that’s where
empathy comes in. Many of us know
someone in the affected areas and
the stories seem unreal and it just
makes you sad, so no matter how
wet or hot it is, no complaints
please.
St. John Ambulance is celebrating
30 years in Brussels. So that means
31 years ago Jim Garniss, Stew
Parker and Deb Trollope rallied 12
volunteers to be a support to
community. Many have moved on to
bigger and better things but theservice started 30 years ago is stillavailable with more volunteers.. So
thanks to the many volunteers over
those years who have served at
parades, festivals, theatre and many
varied sports events.
Thank you so much, especially
you Debbie.
Take care of yourself – no one can
do it like you.

The Brussels Legion held its annual decoration service at the Brussels Cemetery on Sunday.
The weather was beautiful and the bagpipes were playing as a small group turned up for the
service, which was hosted by Legion President Jo-Ann McDonald and Legion Padre Sandra
Cable. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch began with a special
executive meeting. There were eight
members present to discuss the
renovations of the downstairs ladies
washroom. The criteria had been set
and tenders received. A decision
was made by the executive and now
will be presented to the next general
meeting.
There are two local athletes that
are advancing to provincial track
and field in Sudbury in July.
Anthony Vader won gold in the
javelin competition and Scott
Dolmage won gold in the 1,500- and
3,000-metre run. They will attend
the Sudbury competition from July
4-6. Congratulations to the boys and
good luck at the next level.
The Branch hosted the Howick
Seniors club for a roast beef dinner
on Wednesday at the Branch. There
were 46 folks enjoy the meal
prepared by the members. Ladies
helping for the day included Deb
Cann, Mabel Glanville, Mary
Bradshaw and Sharon Robbins on
the preparation shift and Jo-Ann
McDonald and Judy Lee arrived for
the clean-up crew.
Comrade Eric Ross spent a couple
of wonderful days up north recently.
He was at Camp Joseph near
MacTier, the CNIB camp. There
were 36 veterans from Parkwood
Hospital and Sunnybrook Hospital,
20 staff members and nine Legion/
Auxiliary members at the Camp for
four days. They enjoyed fishing,
boating, dancing, campfires, crafts
and just having a good time. They
had a “60s Flower Power” themed
