Huron County OPP spent some
time in Brussels last week after an
incident was reported involving a
young girl and an exchange that was
“a bit off” according to Const. Jamie
Stanley.
Stanley reported that late last
week, and throughout the weekend,
OPP officers were busy canvassing
the village and interviewing
residents about the exchange. He said he wanted to be clear
about the incident, saying that no
crime was committed and that it
wasn’t an attempted abduction, as
was verbally circulating throughout
the Brussels community. Police, he
said, were just approaching the
situation from a suspicious person
standpoint.
As of press time, police were still
working to locate the man in
question.
Stanley said that a young girl wasriding her bicycle around the village
when a man asked her if she wanted
some candy. There was no physical
contact between the two, Stanley
said.
He said the girl did not engage the
man in conversation, but did the
right thing and went home to her
parents who reported the incident to
police.
Once the call was made, Stanley
said, police began investigating the
situation, talking to people in thecommunity in an attempt to locate
the person in question. Once located,
he said, police hope to speak to the
man and determine the nature of the
exchange. Stanley said there was
nothing to indicate an immediate
threat to anyone’s safety as a result
of the incident.
Stanley said that the incident just
goes to further the rule of thumb that
children shouldn’t assume they can
trust an adult they don’t know.
Children have to remain vigilant, travel with friends and not engage in
conversation with strangers, he
said.
Anyone with information about
the incident is asked to contact the
Huron County OPP toll-free at 1-
888-310-1122 or locally at 519-524-
8314. Should you wish to remain
anonymous, you may call Crime
Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477),
where you may be eligible to receive
a cash reward of up to $2,000.
