The Citizen, 2013-06-20, Page 16PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 2013.Locals celebrate milestones on weekend Continued from page 1 MTE before coming to Huron County. Van Diepenbeek suggested perhaps getting back to MTE about the missing schedule and giving them a chance to include one. Laurie, however, said that the county doesn’t negotiate with contractors after bids have been submitted and that it would be fundamentally unfair to the other bidders if negotiations were to take place after the fact. Laurie even suggested that the lack of a schedule was perhaps the reason the proposal was so low, suggesting that they would perhaps fit the work in whenever they had the time, rather than on the county’s schedule. Huron East’s Bernie MacLellan said that negotiating after the fact would set a really bad example. He also said that if the county is going to rely on a scoring system, they should stick to the system. According to the scoring system, Gamsby & Mannerow scored highest, a total score of 87.9 as opposed to MTE’s 85. After discussing the project with Huron East’s Director of Public Works Barry Mills, Laurie said the design phase of the project was budgetted for $200,000, so even at Gamsby & Mannerow’s $162,950, the project is still under its initial estimated budget. This was based on the estimated cost of construction of $3 million, which is 6.5 per cent of the anticipated cost of construction. Howick’s Art Versteeg said, however, that for $40,000, he could be swayed to stray from the scoring system. He said that the scoring system is put in place for staff to make recommendations to councillors, but in the end, it’s up to councillors as to who they should go with. Several councillors, however, felt that because the proposal came in without a schedule, it shouldn’t have even been listed, and therefore not even considered. “I still disagree,” Versteeg said. “We’re here to represent the ratepayers.” Versteeg then made a motion to accept the proposal of MTE and his motion did not receive a seconder, meaning it was a lost motion. The motion to approve staff’s recommendation of Gamsby & Mannerow was then approved. While the proposals of MTE and Gamsby & Mannerow were relatively low, proposals for the project came in as high as $470,000, with three proposals coming in over $300,000. The weatherman brought the farmers to a halt the early part of the week again. They deserve a few days rest, because when the sun shines again, it is go, go, go again. Last Friday and Saturday were quite nice days and then the rain came back to put a damper on spraying and the Brussels Firefighters’ breakfast on Sunday morning. We personally waited until the skies cleared, around 10:30 a.m. and then headed for the breakfast. The lineup was fairly small upon our arrival, but then a large crowd arrived and the lineup grew and grew. The firefighters’ new cooking wagon looked really good and seemed to be working great for them. A couple of tarps were erected and had kept them “dry”. The wet fields have stopped some farmers from spraying the wheat so airplane/helicopter spraying was seen. Bright and early Saturday morning an airplane was spraying the neighbour’s field of wheat. The roar of the airplane engine as it dropped over our house sounded like it was coming right into the house. It was time to get up anyway, but it was a rather noisy awakening. The Winthrop/Walton ladies group gathered for a birthday party last week at the Walton Inn. They were celebrating Shawn Rennick’s 26th birthday. The birthday boy was joined by his friends Brenda Bernard, Karen Braecker, Jeanette Robinson, Jennifer Vellinga, Marlene Glanville, Judy Beuerman and his mother Carol Rennick. The group enjoyed breakfast and some fun. Happy birthday Shawn! It was wonderful weather for the farm wedding of Jillian Houston and Christopher Csoff. The wedding was held on the farm of parents Murray and Maxine Houston. Congratulations to the newlyweds. The couple have a home in Seaforth. Our condolences are expressed to the Crawford family on the passing of Freda Crawford. She will be missed by her sons, Glen and Hugh of the Moncrieff area and daughter Mary Lynn Bray and their families. Freda will be remembered as a teacher at the former Grey Central School for many years. She resided in Cranbrook until her relocation to Huronlea. Our sympathies to all. Our condolences are extended to Jim Bowman on the passing of his brother-in-law Maitland Edgar, of Petrolia. He was the husband of Jim’s twin sister Mary (Bowman) Edgar. He will be missed by his wife, Mary and five children and their families. Our sympathies to the family and relatives of the area. Many local folks attended the retirement party for Doug Boyd of Boyd’s Elevators Ltd. at Kurtzville last week. Doug is married to Bonnie (Fischer), daughter of the late Ken and Doris Fischer of the Brussels area. They operated the elevator system at Kurtzville and for many years and had a satellite elevator on Newry Road. Many local farmers enjoyed the closeness of the system. Congratulations to Doug on his retirement. Pat and George Langlois attended the graduation of their grandson Brent Meyers last week. They accompanied proud parents Bill and Susan Meyers. Brent graduated from the University of Western Ontario in London with a Bachelor of Arts degree with Double Honours with a Major in English and a Major in Sociology. They then went to Milestones restaurant where they were joined by Brent’s wife Andrea, sister Marissa, and brother Curtis and wife Jenna and baby Kate for a celebration of his accomplishments. Jim and Leona Armstrong spent the weekend in Guelph this past weekend. They were attending the 60th anniversary of Jim’s graduation from the University of Guelph with a degree in agriculture. His graduating class has held a reunion every year since their graduation in various places. On special years, the reunion is held in Guelph. They enjoyed dinners, receptions and visiting with many of Jim’s classmates and friends. The good weather we have had has seen the carpenters busy roofing. New shingle roofs as well as steel roofs have gone on between rains. The new building at Ron and Betty McCallum’s has a new roof, Dave Linton and Barry Hoegy’s buildings have new shingle roofs and steel roofing went on the Dalton barns and Glausher shed. The new shed at Mike Boven’s is looking good and the addition at Nick Klaver’s home is progressing nicely. A driveway as smooth as pavement is in place at Gary McNichol’s and Larry McNichol will enjoy the summer weather on the fixed front porch. Clint and Judy Emmrich attended the baptism of their granddaughter Emma on the weekend. Ryan and Katie Johnston had baby Emma baptized at Wingham United Church on Sunday. Ryan’s parents from Belleville attended and other guests included Jamie Emmrich, John and Ruth Uyl and family, Shirley Volker and Adam and Kelly and Connor Jarosz. They returned to the home of Katie and Ryan for an afternoon of visiting and a light lunch. Celebrating birthday s this past week include Kolton O’Neill, Hillary Bachert, Colleen Smith Tanner Boven, Shawn Rennick, Mary Baker, Paul Linton, Jamie Clark, Dawson Dunbar, Margaret McInroy and Kiara Driscoll. Duff’s United Church hosted the Blyth Festival dinner group on Friday evening. There were only 21 to enjoy the roast beef dinner provided by the ladies. Members helping were Marion Godkin of Group 1 organizing and Karen Hoegy, Betty McCallum, Brenda Linton and Olene Dennis working. Dish helpers were Teresa Baan and Jackie Glanville. The service for Duff’s United was held at the cabin in the bush at Paul and Dianne McCallum’s last Sunday. The attendees were shuttled back to the bush with the golf carts and everyone had their lawn chairs to sit and relax in for the service. The Walton band entertained with many musical numbers. Gloria Wilbee conducted the outdoor service. Following the service a barbecued lunch was enjoyed with the over 60 attending providing a bevy of salads and desserts. It was a lovely service.
