Barons drop home game
versus Sebringville Sting 4-3
The Blyth Barons suffered a
heartbreaking 4-3 setback in Huron
County Fastball League play last
Friday evening at the Blyth
ballpark.
Casey Boven connected for a solo
home run in the bottom of the
second inning to give the Barons a 1-
0 lead over the Sebringville Sting.
The Sting tied the game in the top of
the third and then added another run
in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1
lead.
With Chris Stewart on third base,
after hitting a triple, Shawn
Bromley came to bat in the bottom
of the sixth inning and promptly hit
one over the left field fence to give
the Barons a 3-2 lead.
Unfortunately for the Barons, the
Sting put two runners across the
plate in the top of the seventh inning
to claim a 4-3 advantage. The
Barons were unable to score in their
portion of the inning, although they
threatened, giving Sebringville the
one-run margin of victory.
Darcey Cook started on the mound
for the Barons, with Adam Cronin
coming on in relief.
Cronin contributed a pair of
singles for the Barons, with Steve
Hewitt getting a double. Rapping out
single base hits were Cook and
Mike Kerr. Scott Lealess received a
pair of walks and Mike Bromley was
walked once.
Veteran player Mike McDonald
said it was a good game that took
just about 90 minutes to play.
“Again, Casey Boven hit another
home run,” he said.”And, Shawn
Bromley hit a home run for the
Barons.” He said the Barons made a
couple of errors which resulted in
two Sebringville runs.
According to McDonald, pitchers
Cook and Cronin pitched
well.
The Barons were in Wroxeter for a
Sunday afternoon game against the
Royals. Results were not available at
press time.
The Barons play host to the
Wingham Hitmen on Friday,
beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Blyth
ballpark.
Heartbreaker
The Blyth Barons weren’t able to capture a home win as
they suffered a 4-3 loss versus Sebringville. Casey Boven,
shown above, was almost able to tag a Sebringville base
runner who stole second base. (Jim Brown photo)

Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club enjoyed a busy past week
despite a wet and dreary Father’s
Day. The course is in great shape
and the putting greens are running
true.
On Tuesday, June 11 the ladies
had 20 golfers out for golf and lunch
on the patio. Sandra Edgar and
Aantje Robinson were winners of
the closest to the pin while Peg
Lockridge and Fern Wylie teamed
up to take home the alternate shot
first place awards.
Wednesday the senior men had 31
golfers on a super morning to play
golf. Don Bone was the big winner
for the day taking home both low net
and low gross prizes. John Tyrrell
finished second with Bill Deans
coming in third. Grant Currie was
winner of the longest putt with
Lloyd Lamont claiming closest to
the pin.
The Thursday night men saw 70
golfers hit the links on a great golf
scoring night. John Dailleboust fired
his best round of the year with a
solid 37 to take home low gross.
Kent McPherson was the longest
drive winner while closest to the pin
prizes were taken home by Bill Kerr,
Don Bone and Doug Long. Richard
Inglis had a hot putter capturing two
longest putt prizes with Gerry
Edwards, Dailleboust and Bruce
Skinn also going home with longest
putt certificates. The hidden score
winners were Teeswater
boys Wayne Wytock and Lorne
Millen.
Saturday the club was pleased to
hold the seventh annual doctor
recruitment tournament. Organizers
Jan McKague Weishar, Doug Neil,
Doug Skinn and the rest of the
recruitment board again did a super
job putting this event together for a
terrific fundraiser for the entire
community and surrounding area.
Cheryl did a fantastic job serving up
a hot beef buffet and her great
looking dessert table impressed
many of the golfers and
guests.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
The annual golf clinic for the kids
starts on Monday, July 1 and is
filling up rapidly. Anyone who
would like to introduce their
children to this great game should
contact Bruce at the pro shop as
soon as possible.
Tigers home opener results in 6-1 loss
It was an unsuccessful home debut
for the Brussels Tigers last
Wednesday evening as they opened
their home portion of the Huron
County Fastball League schedule at
the Optimist Ball Park in Brussels.
The Tigers were unable to get any
offence going as they fell by a score
of 6-1 to the Fullarton A’s.
Fullarton opened the scoring with
a single run in the second inning and
added two runs in each of the third
and fifth innings and added another
single run in the sixth inning. The
Tigers managed their lone run in the
bottom of the sixth inning.
Brussels managed just four hits in
the contest, Brody TenPas and Justin
Pipe each hit doubles while Shawn
Daw and Corey Campbell each
rapped out a single.
Ben Pletch started on the mound
for the Tigers with Daw coming on
in relief in the third inning.
Veteran player Jason Kellington
said the players were trying hard in
the contest. “We have a lot of young
players and they have been playing
well,” he said. “We have a number of
players still away at school and a
couple who are working out of
town.”
On June 7, the Tigers were edged
by the Wingham Hitmen in
Wingham by a score of 3-2.
In a game played in Zurich on
June 4, the Tigers played the
Rangers to a 5-5 draw in eight
innings.
The Tigers were in Belmore last
Friday for a game against the
Stingers. Brussels hosts the Walton
Brewers on Friday evening at the
Optimist ball park, beginning at 8:30
p.m. The Tigers travel to Goderich
on Monday for an
8:30 p.m. contest against the
Grizzlies.
