Researcher finds 95 per cent don’t wash hands well
I can’t believe it – a researcher
from Toronto found that after a trip
to the bathroom 95 per cent of the
people didn’t wash their hands
properly – over 3,700 people were
secretly observed. We really must
send a copy of all the nagging I’ve
done in this column over the years.
So if you’re washing with soapand water for at least 20 secondsyour chances of staying healthy are
improved. Of the observed bathroom
uses, 66 per cent passed their hands
through the soap and water but the
short washing showed minimal
effect and the five per cent who walk
straight out, make you shudder. I
wish you could see the micro
organisms that are attached to your
fingers and your washing habits
might improve. So on behalf of your
loved ones that you may touch –
soap, water, friction while you sing
the alphabet song lustily – please.
The passage of time is on my mind
today when I think over the past
week. Jim and Leona Armstrong
celebrated 60 years since graduation
from the OAC in Guelph. Many ofJim’s class attended to renewyouthful friendships and to take note
how this period of their lives
affected the years just passed.
Lindsay Watson now has her
Honours BA from Brock University.
Mike and Val proudly watched as
Lindsay’s first class honours were
noted. Grandpa too was grinning.
Just a couple more years Lindsay to
study.
Grandma Nora Stephenson is
pleased to announce that Katie
Bowley is a Guelph University
graduate. Parents Dianne and Mark
are proud of her hard work as she
received her hotel and food
administration status. Crabby Joe’s
in Kincardine is the lucky spot to see
Manager Katie’s new knowledge inaction.Claira Grace Olson made her
debut at Brussels United Church in
her pretty christening gown on
Sunday. Nicole and Mark relaxed
after the words, water and oil had
been spent. Claira seems to have
picked up all the relaxation
techniques of her parents and
grandparents as she smiled,
searched, wiggled and kicked her
wee bare feet throughout her
baptism. A new life step for Claira.
So to all the folks who celebrated
milestones be it 60 years from
graduation, a new degree or a
baptism, we’re proud to know you.
Summer theatre has begun, tickets
for Blyth, Stratford, Drayton and
Grand Bend are waiting for you toenjoy.Enjoy the beauty of June and for
Heaven’s sake wash your hands
properly.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
At the Branch
Decoration service to be held Sunday at 2 p.m.
By Jo-Ann McDonald
This week is Cemetery Decoration
Sunday. It is a time for family or
friends to come together at the
Brussels Cemetery to remember the
lives of loved ones who rest there. A
celebration of lives that had touched
loved ones and have given them
lasting memories to cherish. We
gather to honour them, respect them
and remember them.
The cemetery always looks its
very best with flowers placed on
headstones and the grounds
manicured by the cemetery staff.
The service starts at 2 p.m. with
Padre Sandra Cable officiating. The
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 218
organizes the day with invitations to
all denominations to attend and
participate in the reading of the
names of congregational members
who have passed during the past
year and rest at Brussels Cemetery.
Please plan to attend and don’t
forget to bring a lawn chair. The
Brussels Pipe Band will perform
during the service.
The fish fry crew went to
Wroxeter for the fry hosted by the
Wroxeter Hall Board. They had over
170 enjoy the fish dinner. Working
for the Branch was Rick McDonald,
Glenn Bridge, George Adams, Deb
Cann, Daisy Wong, Jo-Ann
McDonald and Eric Ross.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 13 tables of players. Winners
were: first, Joann MacDonald and
Dorothy Carter, 77; second, Frank
and Betty Hulley, 76; third, Jim
Devereaux and Earl McNaughton,
75; lone hands, Viola Adams and
Ruth Sharpin, eight; low, Tom and
Eileen Sloan, 47. Helping with the
euchre were Bush Whittard and
Sharon Robbins for the day.
The Sunday night dance crowd
enjoyed the music of the Country
Versatiles for the evening. There
were over 75 people who enjoyed
the evening of dancing and a light
lunch.
Apologies to John Lowe
foromitting his name for the list of
new officers. John is an executive
member of Branch 218 and will be
installed at the next meeting along
with the Glanvilles.
Comrade Eric Ross attended the
district track and field meet at
Kincardine on Saturday. The Branch
sponsored four athletes in 14 events
at the meet. Results are incomplete
at this time, but I can report that
Anthony Vader captured gold in one
event.
Deb Cann, with a little help from
Glenn Bridge, has tidied up the front
flowerbeds. Flowers will be planted
as soon as the weather co-operates.

Cooking up a good time
As they do every Father’s Day, members of the Brussels
station of the Huron East Fire Department ditched their
bunker gear for kitchen garb and took to the griddles and
cooked breakfast for hundreds of diners on Sunday. While
a lot of people waited out the inclement weather, once the
sun started shining, they started showing up to see the new
meal trailer that Brussels is sharing with their fellow Huron
East firefighters from Grey. Here getting some food on the
griddle are, front, Tyler Deitner and back, Ron Stevenson.
