MacKenzie Gulutzen didn’t hold anything back when it was her turn to run through the Logan Hallahan Memorial inflatable obstacle course at the Belgrave Community Centre on June 8. The event, which features a barbecue meal and a silent and live auction, raises money for the Wingham and District Hospital Foundation. (Denny Scott photo) Huron East Council is once again faced with a conundrum when it comes to declaring municipally significant events. At its June 4 meeting, council received a request from the Ethel Minor Ball Committee asking council to declare its July 12-14 tournament municipally significant. This declaration by the municipality has become common practice since liquor licensing laws were recently changed, says Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight. In recent years the municipality has had to declare events like the tournament municipally significant to aid in community organizations obtaining liquor licences. The process, however, is getting more difficult, Knight says. He said that because the Ethel Minor Ball Committee is actually an official committee of council, they don’t have to take this step if they want to hold a licensed event. One of the major factors going forward, Knight says, is what the event is raising money for. If money is being raised to be put back into a local park, there should be no problem, but if money is being raised for a specific team or a local league, Knight says it is getting harder to declare such a fundraiser municipally significant. He said that with last year’s Brussels 140th Homecoming celebration, it was easier to declare events municipally significant. Knight used a similar application from the Brussels Optimist Club on the night’s agenda as an example, saying that the Optimists’ volleyball tournament on July 26-28 is harder to declare municipally significant. Council passed a motion not declaring the volleyball tournament municipally significant, but that council had no objections to the Optimists applying for a liquor licence. Knight said if the organization is not a registered charity, that is where they run into problems and need help from the municipality. Knight said he hoped to give the Optimists council’s motion of support and see if they can obtain a licence, if not, some changes may have to be made before another application can be submitted by the club. “We’re not giving them permission,” MacLellan said, “we’re just saying that we don’t have a problem with it if they’re doing it themselves.” Brussels 519-887-9114 The Citizen Blyth 519-523-4792 We have a great selection of books for everyone at...
