Entertainment Leisure&‘Dear Johnny Deere’ returns with nearly same cast
Continued from page 1
Eaglesmith concert in Blyth, he
realized how accurately Cameron
and Archibald had captured the
essence of Eaglesmith.
The entire cast from last year is
back, with one exception. Matt
Campbell could not return for the
remount, but he has been replaced
by Jason Chesworth.
Smith says that while he had only
seen some run-throughs and
rehearsals, it was clear that
Chesworth had already assumed his
role in the cast.
Smith says that for those who saw
the show last year, it is artistically
the same, but that Cameron and
Coates have tightened the first act,
feeling that in 2012, it ran about 10
minutes too long.
Smith says that Dear Johnny
Deere is a perfect example of some
of the great behind-the-scenes work
the Blyth Festival does.
“This is the best of what we do
here as a new play centre,” Smith
says.
For those who haven’t seen the
play before, Smith says, he’s hoping
that audiences are able to see
themselves on stage. The struggles
depicted in Dear Johnny Deere are
the same struggles that happen every
day in Huron County, Smith says, so
a lot of audience members will be
able to relate.
On a local scale, Blyth native
Cappy Onn will reprise her role as
an on-stage fiddler, which brings a
“very local component” to the
production, Smith says.
The greatest aspect of the 14-show
remount, Smith says, is that Blyth
audiences will have one more
chance to see Dear Johnny Deere
before it begins productions all over
the country.
“It’s amazing to think that
something that starts in a village of
800 can end up going from coast to
coast,” Smith says. “That’s the
beauty of this place.”
He also says that the success of
Dear Johnny Deere outside of
Huron County is a real testament to
the Festival and its innovation.
“When a show like this reaches
into other communities, it’s a great
endorsement of the work being done
here,” Smith says.
Along with the cast, former
artistic director Eric Coates is back
to direct Dear Johnny Deere, as he
did last season.
In a recent interview he says that
he had been “yearning” to come
back to Huron County, so he was
glad the remount of Dear
Johnny Deere gave him that
opportunity.
Dear Johnny Deere officially
opens tonight, June 13, at Blyth
Memorial Hall and runs until
Saturday, June 22. For tickets call

Central Huron ratepayers will see
their water and wastewater rates rise
by two per cent in the year to come.
In presenting a draft report,
Finance Director Terri Taylor said
while council could choose to hold
off on increasing the rates, that move
could prevent a problem down the
road for the sewer reserves since
they are going to drop by about half
of its $342,000 allocation this year
due to ongoing projects,
including the one on East Street in
Clinton.
“We have a lot for sewer works
ahead of us whereas the water, not so
much,” said Taylor.
Taylor noted the average water bill
is $150 every two months, and that it
is difficult to compare Central
Huron’s rates to those of
neighbouring municipalities since
everyone has different types of
systems in place.
Councillor Dan Colquhoun noted
most ratepayers believe they pay
enough already.
“Most complaints I hear in this
town are about the costs of the
water,” he said, noting his last bill
was $168 for two people.
The rates will officially be set
once council formally approves the
bylaw.

While their older schoolmates took to the musical instruments to perform their parts of the
spring concert, the Grades 2A, 2B and 2C classes at Maitland River Elementary School used
their natural musical instruments to participate by singing. The spring concert, held last week,
was the first for the recently amalgamated school. (Denny Scott photo)
