(Denny Scott photo) National plowing champions Paul Dodds and Kevin Haney, from the Winthrop and Seaforth areas respectively, will be honoured by their communities later this month. Huron County Queen of the Furrow Kayla Bishop told Huron County councillors at their June 5 meeting the celebration would be happening at the Seaforth Agriplex on June 23 from 2-4 p.m. She welcomed all councillors to the event. Bishop also told councillors that the site of the 2017 International Plowing Match in Huron Countywould be revealed that day.Currently four sites are being considered. Bishop told councillors that she first became involved in agriculture because of a growing disconnect she was seeing between urban and rural communities. She said she wanted to bridge that gap. *** Former OPP officer Don Shropshall was part of a special ceremony at the meeting, which honoured both civilians and emergency services personnel who helped to save his life earlier this year. Shropshall, who also referees hockey, was ready to start a game at the Hensall Arena when he went into cardiac arrest. Civilians called 911 and aided Shropshall with a defibrillator until paramedics could arrive. “I can’t say enough about everyone,” Shropshall said as he addressed those in attendance. “If not for them, I wouldn’t be here today.” He said he will be forever grateful for the work the paramedics and civilians put in to saving his life. “It takes a special kind of person to try and save a person’s life,” he said. “There’s nothing else you can do that’s greater in your life.” Shropshall went on to say that he always considered himself active and healthy, but he wanted to convey the message that everyone should see their doctor regularly, because health issues can creep into anyone’s life. He added that he hopes one day to help someone as he was helped and hopefully save a life to return the favour. “Thank you for everything you did for me,” he told the assembled group. Warden George Robertson, who knew Shropshall from their days on the OPP together, said that Shropshall had done his fair share of work saving people’s lives and that he deserved what he got, having hislife saved.“You’ve always had the ability to attract a crowd,” Robertson told Shropshall, “and this is a good one.” *** Council approved a motion that will allow the Great Lakes Storm of 1913 Remembrance Planning Committee to place two 40-foot- high banners on the Goderich Courthouse. The banners will remain on the courthouse from June through to Nov. 10 when the final remembrance ceremony will take place. The banners measure 40 feet high and depicts a 40-foot wave the 1913 storm was said to have created. Council will also look into purchasing the banners from the committee when they are taken down. The cost of the banners is $350 each. Keith Homan, who made the presentation, joked that the county could hold onto the banners for 2113 when the 200th anniversary of the storm will be celebrated. *** Bids came back after a request for proposals was sent out by the county for its organizational review of the county’s emergency services department. Chief Administrative Officer Brenda Orchard said eight firms applied for the job. She asked that the request for proposals committee stay together as the steering committee. The committee consists of Huron East’s Joe Steffler, Morris-Turnberry’s Paul Gowing, Goderich’s Deb Shewfelt and Warden George Robertson.
