Walton beats reigning champs from Belmore
The Walton Brewers opened the
home portion of the 2013 Huron
County Fastball League season on
June 4 and scored a 9-4 decision
over the defending league
champion, Belmore Stingers.
Jeff Smith went the distance on
the mound to record the victory for
the Brewers.
The Brewers put three runners
across the plate in the first inning
and added two more in the bottom of
the second inning. Belmore
responded with three of their own in
the top of the third inning, but the
Brewers offence was just too much
for the Stingers.
Bruce Pearn accounted for three
runs batted in as he connected for a
two-run home run in the second
inning and added a RBI single. Matt
Shortreed had two RBIs with a
single. Kevin Murray had a single
and double and knocked in one run.
Jeff Smith and Jeff Robinson each
connected for a triple and Darryl
Houston got a pair of singles and
was hit by a pitch to lead off the first
inning. Adam Verkley rapped out
one single.
According to veteran player Scott
McDonald, the game was a good
one for the first home game of the
season.
“Everyone played well,” he said.
“We received good pitching and we
had some timely hitting.”
The May 28 home game against
the Goderich Grizzlies, that was
postponed due to the weather, has
been rescheduled to July 17,
beginning at 8 p.m. at the Walton
ball park.The Brewers were in
Goderich on Monday for a game
against the Grizzlies. The next home
game for the Brewers is Tuesday
when they host Fullarton A’s,
beginning at 8 p.m.

Landslide victory
The Goderich Grizzlies may well find themselves on the
endangered species list soon if they keep putting up scores
like they did against the Blyth Barons last week. The
Grizzlies were doubled by a score of 14-7 in just five
innings, resulting in a big win for Blyth. Here, however, in a
minor victory, Blyth’s Shawn Bromley was unable to slap a
tag on a Goderich baserunner as he makes his way back
to first base in time. (Jim Brown photo)
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club was sure glad for having a gas
oven on Sunday, June 8 during the
power outage as Cheryl was
prepping in the dark with the turkeys
in the oven. The club was pleased to
help Mary and Ross Procter
celebrate their 60th wedding
anniversary. Over 70 family
members joined in the dining lounge
for a beef and turkey buffet. Earlier
in the day close to 200 friends and
neighbours joined the popular and
well-liked couple for a come-and-go
get-together at the club.
On Saturday, June 8 the Godden
family from the Ethel area played
nine holes of golf before joining for
lunch in the golfers’ lounge.
Saturday afternoon the club was
glad to hold the Payne wedding as
Janine and Carson exchanged vows
in front of the fireplace. Over 100
family and friends enjoyed a chicken
and beef buffet with the reception
following. The happy couple had a
beautiful day for their wedding and
the staff at the club offer them all the
best for the future.
Friday night’s wing night had
some stiff competition from the
Muskrat festival but the girls still
managed to cook up over 700 tasty
wings. In golf action over 20 ladies
hit the links on Tuesday ladies day
with Joanne Harrison taking
home the prize for longest
putt.
The Wednesday morning senior
men had 20 patient golfers wait to
tee off following the Big Brothers
golf fundraiser golf tourney. When
action finally got underway our
newest birthday boy, 93-year-old
Clayt Ruppel led the way taking
home both low net and longest putt
made. Glenn McMichael took
second with Don Bone, third. Grant
Currie was winner of the closest to
the pin.
The Thursday night men had 53
die hards out on a cool drizzly night
for golf. Don Edgar and Don Bone
both shot 38 claiming low gross.
Winners of the longest putts were
Brandon Rybicki, Edgar and Trevor
Hopf. The closest to the pins went to
Bone and Dan Campbell. Doug Neil
and Neil Bieman were hidden score
winners.
