Vodden praises annual service
Writer questions rights, county official plan
THE EDITOR,
Sunday was Decoration Day at the
cemetery. All week, I have been
working on the graveside gardens of
my family members. I want to thank
the ladies who have so faithfully
cared for the large beds. The
workers from the municipality who
mowed and trimmed and filled the
water troughs did their part to make
this day of remembrance
meaningful.
Many of our visitors comment on
how beautiful Blyth Union
Cemetery is. Some who have no
family member buried there still
come again and again to enjoy the
surroundings, the beautiful trees,
new and old, and the plantings of
shrubs and flowers by families at the
grave sites of loved ones. It is a
treasured place.
Our local Legion members are to
be thanked as well for, in the week
preceding Decoration Day, going
throughout the cemetery and placing
crosses on graves of all who have
served in our armed forces. The
time and research involved is
admirable. The attendance of the
colour party and Legion members
was appreciated as one could see by
the faces of those in attendance.
To the two ministers, Les Cook
and Gary Clark who gave up their
Sunday afternoon I would also say
thanks.
Sincerely,
Janis (Morritt) Vodden.
THE EDITOR,
It would seem that there are
people unaware of how official plans
are created and the way governments
use them. How unfortunate that you
will never know the truth about how
your property is being rezoned,
dedicated, restricted and used
without your knowledge or
permission. Never realizing how
much of an impact it has on beautiful
Huron County (Ontario’s West
Coast) or how important it is to the
future of our communities.
How many people will ever know
the truth behind its creation? Who
benefits from it? Was there bias or
conflict involved? For those who
choose to zone out and watch
television, I say continue watching
as your wealth is redistributed, but
do not complain when you can’t
build, sever, expand or change your
property because government points
to the official plan. There is a way to
find out the answers to these
questions and it is through the
appeal of the Huron County official
plan at an Ontario Municipal Board
hearing which started June 3.
There is a growing number of
people in Huron County who have
taken the time to learn about how
our Huron County official plan
amendment was created and
implemented. There are significant
flaws in this plan. This is supposed
to reflect the vision, goals and
policies of the people of Huron
County. However, the province
made 41 additions or deletions to the
residents’ plan.
On Jan. 19, 2012, I attended the
Central Huron Council meeting
where a county planner was giving a
presentation. She disclosed that the
official plan had been approved by
the Minister of Municipal Affairs
Jan. 4, 2012 with a 20-day appeal
period. We learned that the Huron
County Planning Department had
failed to notify the council of Central
Huron or any of the other
municipalities in Huron County.
This also included any of those on
Huron County Council who had
requested notification. Our council
was asked to appeal certain issues
brought to the table by councillors
and myself. Central Huron Council
saw merit in the appeal of these
issues. By this time there were only
two working days left in the appeal
period.
An appeal of the County’s official
plan was made on Jan. 23, 2012 on
behalf of all the people in the
municipality. We the residents
require the right to decide what is
valued for our community for the
development of petroleum
extraction, aggregate extraction,
commercial water taking and
renewable energy including
industrial wind projects or any other
matter that the residents and council
feel is relevant. This is not a question
of pro or con on any of these issues,
only the right to appeal; the right to
say “no”. We the people of Central
Huron reserve these rights to
determine our own future. Why does
any of this matter? It matters
because all wording in our
municipal plan must align with the
county plan. Once the county plan is
adopted, all municipal zoning must
comply within three years. This is
how your private property rights and
uses are being restricted.
There are those in our community
who want to characterize this appeal
as only on one issue. That would
seem far too narrow an interpretation
of this appeal process. This appeal is
about our fundamental rights to the
fair and open process of
government. We as a society must
not sit idly by and watch a slow and
steady dissolution of our freedoms.
We need to understand the processes
used by all levels of government and
fight back to retain the justice we
have been afforded by the
democratic process.
Please come out and share your
concerns at Central Huron Council’s
meeting on Tuesday, June 18 at 7
p.m. at the Regional Equine and
Agricultural Centre of Huron
(REACH).

THE EDITOR,
My name is Ashley Daniels-
Bobiwash and I am a summer
student at the Huron County
Museum and Historic Gaol. I am
working on an exhibit about what
life was like in Huron County
during the First and Second World
Wars titled “Huron County on the
Homefront.”
I have been able to use resources
at the Huron County Museum, but
in order to best explain and
understand what life was like in the
County during those times, it would
be helpful to speak with individuals
who were living here at that time. If
you lived in Huron County between
1914-1918 or 1939-1945, your
stories and life from that time are of
interest to us. What did you do to
aid the war effort here at home? Did
the company you worked for
change due to the war efforts? Did
life on the farm or at home change
for you? Were you part of the Red
Cross, Women’s Institute or any
other wartime committees?
If you are involved today in an
organization that has historical
records of their contributions to the
war efforts I would also be
interested in reviewing these
records for relevant research.
If you are interested in sharing
please call me at 519-524-2686 or

interview.
