Spreading the good word about Brussels is nothing new to Ami Schimanski of Brussels, the only change is that now she’s doing it in an official capacity. Now, through an internship made possible through the Canadian Community Economic Development Network, based in Quebec, Schimanski is spending her summer championing all things Brussels, while at the same time working on social enterprising with the Above The Falls challenge course near Benmiller. Paul Nichol of the Huron Business Development Corporation (HBDC) says that Schimanski’s athletic background made her an instant candidate for the position, which is why he approached her in the first place. The HBDC submitted the application for the internship in March, Nichol says, and Schimanski began her work in May, after receiving approval in April. The internship is awarded to recent college or university graduates who are under the age of 30 and who are not returning to school. Nichol says that while the internship is a great first “job” for recent graduates, it’s also about more than that. “It’s about grabbing these young graduates and luring them into the dark world of economic development,” Nichol said with a laugh, adding that programs like this internship are part of the “movement” that he often talks about, that has an emphasis on rural communities and economic development within those communities. Nichol said that Schimanski, to him, represents the next generation of community champions. “I’ve been doing this for 20 years and we’re looking for the next generation, and I just don’t see it,” Nichol said. “Some graduates are coming through [the Universities of] Guelph and Waterloo, but they’re not interested in working in rural communities.” Nichol said that internships like the one Schimanski is participating in help to preserve the “sustainability of his profession” while helping rural communities at the same time. In the short amount of time she has been at the position, Schimanski says she has split her time between the Above The Falls challenge course, while pouring over Brussels- related documents, including all of the studies that have been conducted recently. Nichol cited a recent Citizen article in which Huron East Economic Development Officer Jan Hawley said that once the Brussels streetscape plan had been completed, it was then that the “hard work” of implementing the plan would begin. Nichol says that is where Schimanski comes in. Schimanski is hoping to “cost out” some programs and draw up timelines for implementation of several community programs. Schimanski says that she’s hoping to take the ideas that have been put to paper and have them implemented in the next five to 10 years. “This really gives us a huge leg up going forward,” Nichol said. The internship, Nichol says, really didn’t have anything to do with Brussels at all, but the position has been adapted by the community to be tailored more to both what the community and Schimanski wantout of it.Schimanski has been working with the Brussels Farmers’ Market, co-ordinating “Music on Main” which has been a popular component of this year’s market. Schimanski has also been workingwith the Brussels Lions Club duringthe creation of the Leo Club, which began just over a month ago. Schimanski says that as a 22-year- old woman, she is old enough to be taken seriously by the adults in the Lions Club, but young enough tointeract with the young members ofthe Leo Club, making her the perfect liaison.
