What a week of weather we had
last week. A few days of cool yet
nice weather, frost at night, then it
changes and the humidity and heat
arrive. With the heat, the mosquitoes
also arrived. It is hard to believe that
with only two days of hot weather
and there were hundreds of them
out. I guess we can say summer has
arrived.
The weather on Friday, late in the
afternoon, was awful. It was just
after 4 p.m. when the storm hit the
area I was driving in. Sheets of rain
pummeled the bus and the driving
was difficult. It seemed to last
forever, but it only lasted for about
two miles and then it eased. A lot of
water sure came down in a very short
time.
The Walton Hall was busy place
on Wednesday with the Huron Perth
Women’s Institute District Annual
meeting. They conducted their
meeting in the morning and then had
a break to enjoy a roast beef dinner
provided by the Walton Hall Board
at noon. They continued their
meetings until mid-afternoon.
Helping the board were Karen
Hoegy, Monique Baan, Pat Gillis,
Val Pethick and Betty McCallum.
Helping with the set up and pre-
work were Judy Lee and Jo-Ann
McDonald.
Have you noticed the new sign at
the Walton Ball Park. The Walton
Brewers organized the purchase of
the new sign and it is really nice.
Thanks to the men’s team and the
sponsors who made the sign
possible. It was installed by Scott
McDonald and Kevin Murray of the
Brewers.
Reports on local folks in hospital
include Maxine Houston, a patient in
Stratford Hospital. We hope she is
improving daily. Phyllis Mitchell is
still a patient in Seaforth Hospital
and we hope she is also improving.
Margery Huether is still a patient in
London Hospital. We can confirm
that Anne Ryan is indeed at home.
She is supposed to take it easy, so we
hope she is doing just that. Val
Shortreed has undergone more eye
surgery and we hope she is doing
well. She is to take it easy and “keep
her head down”. We wish her well.
We hope that Valerie Gratto is
coming along after having surgery
on her foot. She has her mom, Lily
Fincham, looking after her every
beck and call. Hope you are up andaround soon. Dianne McCallum hadsurgery on her foot this past week.
We hope she heals quickly and will
be able to enjoy late summer biking.
Neil Turnbull is in the area for a
couple of weeks. He is here to see
family, friends and look after his
properties. He is staying at the
Walton Inn and will be returning to
B.C. before week’s end.
Kevin and Kim Murray are the
proud parents of a baby boy,
Stephen. Congratulations to them
and grandparents Ken and Anne
Murray.
The Knight boys have returned
from a trip to the States. The two
brothers Jack and Murray Knight
and the two brothers Brad and Steve
Knight went to the Indy 500 in
Indianapolis. They left Friday and
returned late Monday night. On
Saturday they spent the day
checking out the area. They went to
the track and went to the Hall of
Fame. They walked down Gasoline
Alley, a boulevard of garages and t-
shirt and souvenir shops. Sunday
was race day and upon arriving at the
track, security was tight, and long
lineups and waits were encountered.
They made it to their seats before the
race started and Jack reports, putting
in the ear plugs dinned the noise just
fine. Jack had the trip to the Indy 500
on his bucket list of things to do and
the four men enjoyed the outing
immensely.
Congratulations to Jack and Dona
Knight who celebrated their
55th wedding anniversary.
The couple enjoyed a celebratory
supper together at The Keg on May
10.
The Lions Club held another
successful elimination draw on the
weekend. There were quite a few
Walton-ites who were winners.
Moncrieff Road had three current
residents and two former residents
become winners. Bob Cummings,
Rob Vanderveen and Chris and Lisa
Stevenson live on or very close to
Moncrieff and John Davies and
Brian Workman are former residents
and all were winners. Ross and Marg
Bennett and John W. Brown (former
Waltoners) were winners and
winners with a Walton address
included Marina and Cody
Glanville, Bob and Rose Robinson,
and the big winners were Bruno and
Joyce Braecker. Walton and former
Walton folks did very well.
Congratulations to all.
It was party time at the Blyth
Campground on the weekend.
Friends and family were invited to
help celebrate Matt Townsend’s
40th birthday. They enjoyed
music, fellowship and fun for the
evening.
If you thought you have seen
Marilyn McDonald around this
week – you have. Marilyn is staying
at Jim and Linda McDonalds for a
short time while her new apartment
is being completed in Grand Bend.
Hopefully, she has time to get
around and have a visit with all her
old Walton friends while she is in the
area.
It is anniversary Sunday at Duff’s
United Church this Sunday. Note
that the service time is at 11 a.m. and
lunch will be served following the
service. Remind family and friends
to return and celebrate Duff’s 151th
anniversary. Bruce Whitmore is the
guest speaker. If you missed picking
up an anniversary cookbook or
maybe need another as they are great
gifts, I’m sure there are some still
available.
The June birthdays include Scott
Henderson, Sister Teresa Ryan, Neil
McGavin, Kyle Pryce, Patricia
Andrades, Bill Humphries, Ernie
Lewington, Shelley Coleman, Scott
Dalton, Jillian Houston, Jeffrey Parr,
Merle Hackwell, Sarah Tipple,
Jacob McGavin, and Sharon
Stephenson. Happy birthday to
all.
Brewers spruce up park with new team sign
Looking good
The Walton Brewers, with help from some local sponsors, helped to improve their home
ballpark last week by erecting this new sign, the reverse side of which can be seen below. The
Brewers play in the Huron County Fastball League and are currently 1-1 in the 2013 season.
