Last week at the Western Ontario
Secondary Schools Athletic
Association (WOSSAA) track and
field event 16 F.E. Madill Secondary
School athletes advanced in 23
events to compete at the OFSAA
Regionals held at the new, state of
the art, track facility at Jacob
Hespeler Secondary School in
Cambridge.
At the qualifier meet, Madill
athletes rose to the challenge coming
up with six individual ‘personal
bests’, one relay ‘personal best’, one
new school record and three athletes
qualifying for the Ontario Federation
of School Athletics Associations
(OFSAA), by reaching the top four
in a event in five events.
In Senior Girls high jump, Leah
Hutchison cleared the bar at new
heights (1.60 metres) breaking a
joint record held by Heather Askes(1995) and Kristin O’Neil (1996)and tying for fourth but ending up
sixth in the tie breaker. Senior Kelsie
Eadie also had her best performance
in the triple jump event with 10.46
metres to earn sixth place.
In Junior Boys high jump, Justin
McKague continued his relentless
march towards OFSAA winning the
event with a leap of 1.80 metres.
Jayden Anderson-Johnston had her
fastest race over 200-metre this
season racing the distance in 27.89
seconds.
In Midget Girls high jump,
Madeleine Gallaher valiantly
continued to jump in a torrential rain
storm. After a very successful
season, she came up just short of
qualifying with a tie breaker that
moved her from fourth to sixth.
Stuart Cameron, after a successful
season, was robbed of a qualifying
spot in the Junior shot put event
when he put the implement 14.46
metres, just three centimetres behind
the fourth place athlete. Teammate
Karissa Schiestel has also performed
well all season but was unable to
advance to OFSAA in shot and
discus.
Lyndon Smith tore down the 100-
metre stretch in a blanket finish of
the Midget Boys 100-metre. The
photo timing placed him fourth
overall. Battling some gusty winds in
the 300-metre hurdles he qualified in
a second event for OFSAA with
another fourth place finish and a best
time of 43.71 seconds.
Luke Dailleboust made the final of
the 110-metre hurdles to claim sixth
place with a final time of 14.71
seconds. Competing in both the pole
vault and long jump simultaneously,
he was able to run between events
and earn third place in long jump
with a best ever jump of 6.73 metres.
In pole vault he cleared the bar at
3.85 metres to earn third and a
qualifying position in a second event.
In his first year as a Senior,
Anthony Vader continued to improve
throwing the 800-gram javelin the
best he has thrown all season by
reaching a distance of 44.15 metres.
The Senior Boys 4x100-metre
relay team (Jesse Fortier, Anthony
Vader, Justin McKague, Luke
Dailleboust) sprinted the 400-metre
distance smoothly connecting at all
of the exchanges and bettering theirtime 45.67 seconds.Previously, the Madill track and
field team competed in London for
the WOSSAA championship.
In temperatures hovering just
above 0°C and with gusty winds out
of the north, the team competed at
TD Waterhouse Stadium at the
University of Western Ontario. Once
again team members persevered in
adverse conditions and met the
challenges. The 38 Madill athletes
who attended earned 24 ‘personal
best’ performances. Sixteen Madill
athletes advance to OFSAA West
Regionals in 23 events. Dailleboust
was named the top senior boy
athlete. There were two first place,
five second place, one third place
and a multitude of fourth to sixth
place finishes. In order to qualify for
Regionals, athletes must place in the
top five in their events.
Smith was the fastest athlete in the
Midget Boys 100-metre sprinting the
stretch in a new best time of 11.66
seconds. He also bettered his time in
the 300-metre hurdles to 44.58
seconds to earn a second place,
though he would best that again in
Cambridge.
In Senior Boys action, Dailleboust,in a competitive field of hurdlers, sprinted the 110-metre distance to a
second place finish. In pole vault, he
soared over a new height, 3.90
metres, to win second. Doug Wood,
Canadian record holder and
Dailleboust’s uncle and coach was
able to attend to coach him.
In his final event, long jump, he
again set a new best distance by
jumping 6.7 metres for his third
second place finish and the
individual WOSSAA title.
The other first place finish came in
Junior Boys high jump when
McKague set a new ‘personal best’
height clearing the bar at 1.85
metres.
The team is now preparing for
OFSAA in Oshawa and for the
District C Legion meet in
Kincardine.
