Madill athletes set sights on OFSAA in Oshawa Last week at the Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (WOSSAA) track and field event 16 F.E. Madill Secondary School athletes advanced in 23 events to compete at the OFSAA Regionals held at the new, state of the art, track facility at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School in Cambridge. At the qualifier meet, Madill athletes rose to the challenge coming up with six individual ‘personal bests’, one relay ‘personal best’, one new school record and three athletes qualifying for the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Associations (OFSAA), by reaching the top four in a event in five events. In Senior Girls high jump, Leah Hutchison cleared the bar at new heights (1.60 metres) breaking a joint record held by Heather Askes(1995) and Kristin O’Neil (1996)and tying for fourth but ending up sixth in the tie breaker. Senior Kelsie Eadie also had her best performance in the triple jump event with 10.46 metres to earn sixth place. In Junior Boys high jump, Justin McKague continued his relentless march towards OFSAA winning the event with a leap of 1.80 metres. Jayden Anderson-Johnston had her fastest race over 200-metre this season racing the distance in 27.89 seconds. In Midget Girls high jump, Madeleine Gallaher valiantly continued to jump in a torrential rain storm. After a very successful season, she came up just short of qualifying with a tie breaker that moved her from fourth to sixth. Stuart Cameron, after a successful season, was robbed of a qualifying spot in the Junior shot put event when he put the implement 14.46 metres, just three centimetres behind the fourth place athlete. Teammate Karissa Schiestel has also performed well all season but was unable to advance to OFSAA in shot and discus. Lyndon Smith tore down the 100- metre stretch in a blanket finish of the Midget Boys 100-metre. The photo timing placed him fourth overall. Battling some gusty winds in the 300-metre hurdles he qualified in a second event for OFSAA with another fourth place finish and a best time of 43.71 seconds. Luke Dailleboust made the final of the 110-metre hurdles to claim sixth place with a final time of 14.71 seconds. Competing in both the pole vault and long jump simultaneously, he was able to run between events and earn third place in long jump with a best ever jump of 6.73 metres. In pole vault he cleared the bar at 3.85 metres to earn third and a qualifying position in a second event. In his first year as a Senior, Anthony Vader continued to improve throwing the 800-gram javelin the best he has thrown all season by reaching a distance of 44.15 metres. The Senior Boys 4x100-metre relay team (Jesse Fortier, Anthony Vader, Justin McKague, Luke Dailleboust) sprinted the 400-metre distance smoothly connecting at all of the exchanges and bettering theirtime 45.67 seconds.Previously, the Madill track and field team competed in London for the WOSSAA championship. In temperatures hovering just above 0°C and with gusty winds out of the north, the team competed at TD Waterhouse Stadium at the University of Western Ontario. Once again team members persevered in adverse conditions and met the challenges. The 38 Madill athletes who attended earned 24 ‘personal best’ performances. Sixteen Madill athletes advance to OFSAA West Regionals in 23 events. Dailleboust was named the top senior boy athlete. There were two first place, five second place, one third place and a multitude of fourth to sixth place finishes. In order to qualify for Regionals, athletes must place in the top five in their events. Smith was the fastest athlete in the Midget Boys 100-metre sprinting the stretch in a new best time of 11.66 seconds. He also bettered his time in the 300-metre hurdles to 44.58 seconds to earn a second place, though he would best that again in Cambridge. In Senior Boys action, Dailleboust,in a competitive field of hurdlers,sprinted the 110-metre distance to a second place finish. In pole vault, he soared over a new height, 3.90 metres, to win second. Doug Wood, Canadian record holder and Dailleboust’s uncle and coach was able to attend to coach him. In his final event, long jump, he again set a new best distance by jumping 6.7 metres for his third second place finish and the individual WOSSAA title. The other first place finish came in Junior Boys high jump when McKague set a new ‘personal best’ height clearing the bar at 1.85 metres. The team is now preparing for OFSAA in Oshawa and for the District C Legion meet in Kincardine. Qualified! F.E.
