Blyth’s Steve Cook was
nominated for the Most Valuable
Player Award at the Inspiration
Event 2013 put on by the Huron-
Perth Area Providers Council and
walked away with the award.
The event, held on Tuesday, May
28, recognized healthcare
professionals and caregivers in the
area. There were 27 nominees
honoured in total.
“I was really taken back with the
nomination,” Cook said. “I got in
touch with the woman who sent me
the e-mail because I thought they
had the wrong Steve Cook.”
Cook said that, while he was
grateful for the recognition, he
wasn’t the only person who should
be recognized. He also said that a big
part of why he does his job is
because of the true reward that he
receives every day.
“I said it was indeed an honour
and very much appreciated the work
they’d put on to give us the award,”
he said. “The fact really was, I didn’t
need an award. My awards come
each and every day. I receive my
awards through the staff and the
residents I work with.”
Cook explained that there were a
number of people who received the
nominations and that each of the 27
nominees did receive an award.
Cook was recognized for his
service by his superior, Debra
Corrie. He originally started at
Huronview Home for the Aged in
1978 before moving to Huronlea
Home for the Aged 20 years ago. He
has served the “Homes” group for 35
years and, according to Corrie, done
so by caring for every single resident
on an individual basis.
Corrie goes on to say that, to care
for others, an individual needs to be
comfortable with themselves and
that Cook displays that.
Cook was also on hand last week
for the 20th anniversary celebration
of Huronlea Home for the Aged
which is located in Brussels.
Cook’s nomination letter reads as
follows:
Steve has been employed with
[Huron County] Homes since
November 1978, so this coming
November marks 35 years!
Wow, I could not imagine his
energy 35 years ago! Steve started
out in the nursing department and
later transferred to the activation
department. Steve has always stood
out in my mind as sincere and one
with great passion for his work.
Steve has an energy that is never
ending: he uses his positive energy
to energize everyone around him.
The residents glow when Steve
enters the room. Positive energy is
what moves each and every one,
residents and co-workers alike to
believe in themselves and take action
more than where that energy is notaround. He has a way of engagingnot only the residents but also co-
workers with his humour. He is all-
inclusive, no one ever feels left out
when he is present.
Each resident is in need of
individual care. Steve is able to cater
to each resident’s needs whether it
be in song, reminiscing, walking,
reading to them, crafting with them,
gardening or just sitting and holding
someone’s hand.
You have to be comfortable and
confident with yourself in order to
care for others. This is something
that is very apparent to Steve.
Steve is never happy with status
quo, he likes to push the envelope.
Such as recently, we had been
brainstorming about different
programs for men to do at Huronlea.
Steve suggested we get an old car
and park it outside one of the unit
doors in an open space. Then the
men could tinker around the car,
clean it, wax it and check the oil, etc.
What a genius idea!
Recently at Huronlea’s 20-year
anniversary tea, Steve shared a poem
he wrote for the opening of Huronlea
20 years ago. Then, more recently,
he wrote a song for Huronlea. The
song includes the residents, staff,
management and county council.
This clearly shows how passionate
Steve is about his work.
Steve takes obstacles with a grain
of salt. His happy go lucky
personality does not allow him to be
discouraged. If he has a goal in
mind, he is sure to accomplish it. If
the goal seems unattainable then he
changes his expectations to meet the
goal. He recognizes that situations
are not always perfect, so he makes
the best of them.
Team play also comes to mind
when you see Steve.
Teamwork is essential to work
effectively for the homes. Steve
makes that teamwork easy and fun
for all involved. He has never turned
down a request for help, whether it is
in the dietary department,
housekeeping, maintenance or
nursing department. On any given
day, you can catch Steve assisting or
taking it upon himself to complete a
task in another department otherthan his own department. Whenasked by management to give
feedback or assist in a project, he has
been more than happy to contribute.
Each day Steve strives to make the
residents feel as much at home as he
can. He greets everyone each
morning over the [public address
system] with a message and cheery
good morning. Steve’s contributionand commitment to the HuronCounty Homes over the past 35
years is impressive.
One last comment, since I have
been here six years... Steve has not
had one sick day. Keep up the great
work Steve.
Debra Corrie.
