Plant auction shines light on society’s good work
I don’t think Ireland can have
much on us for the variety of green
that we’re showing at this time. Just
stand still, look towards the horizon
and bring your eyes back to your
toes, all the while counting the
shades of green. Mother Nature is at
her showiest just now whetheryou’re walking in the bush orchecking the neighbours’ field or
flowerbed.
Canon Daniel Beuermann is the
newest United Church person in
Brussels. He looked angelic in his
wee plaid shirt as his parents Patricia
and Josh, sister and family looked
on. Grandma Joan, Grandpa Neil
and great-grandmothers smiled in
admiration.
We are so fortunate to have so
many active volunteer groups in our
community. Name a subject and a
group is nearby to share knowledge,
enthusiasm and common goals. The
two that come to mind this week are
the horticultural folks and the Lions
Club. Both these have stood the test
of time, and numbers and leadership
retain hope for the future.
A plant auction was held last week
as a way to share vegetation, to raise
funds and to have some fun. Kathy
Workman and Lois Lee head theexecutive for the BrusselsHorticultural Society and keep their
meetings interesting. On Monday
the plants brought by members
nearly overwhelmed the auctioneer
Judy Hahn. Bargains were had, new
plants in new gardens obtained, new
knowledge of these plants and of
course cash changed hands, all to
keep our spaces pretty. As well these
volunteers are the ones who look
after the flowerbeds in the village
and plant the boxes on Turnberry
Street. Thank you so much – good
work folks.
Tradition is one of those
comfortable words. Familiar, safe,
family all come to mind when I say
the word. The Lions elimination
draw and dinner is a tradition every
year. People regularly buy their
ticket from the same members
whether they go or not, just because
it’s a good thing. The Lions Club has
earned the support of communityover the years and each of usprobably has a favourite project of
theirs. Did one of your children have
swimming lessons, or enjoy a Lions
exchange visit, or played in the park
or were given funds to help your
purpose? So we remember and
support the Lions Club as they work
hard to offer community an evening
of sharing a meal, chat and a small
chance of winning your money back.
So the arena floor was teeming with
people as the Ballagh Bunch and
their great music put a spring in the
steps and a tap in the feet as folks
enjoyed the company of community.
Thanks Lions, you did it again.
Take care of yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
