At the current rate of use, Morris-
Turnberry’s Morris landfill site may
have well over 100 years of capacity,
according to a report from the
municipality’s consulting engineer
delivered to the May 21 meeting of
council.
The annual monitoring report
from R. J. Burnside and Associates
Limited said the landfill is receiving
a little over 1,000 cubic metres ofwaste a year. A new cell of thelandfill, opened last year, has a total
capacity of 27,000 cubic metres
meaning it has 25 years capacity at
the current rate of use.
Beyond that, total landfill site
capacity, subject to approval to open
other areas of the site, is estimated at
240,000 cubic metres, leading to the
estimate of more than 100 years of
use.
As for recent site operation, Gary
Pipe, director of public works notedthere were no complaints in 2011(the last period tallied for the report)
and things generally seem to be in
good shape.
“There’s a good set-up with the
new landfill,” he said. “People also
seem to be doing a better job of
recycling.”
Mayor Paul Gowing said he hadn’t
had one complaint about the new
wheelie-bins that were introduced
for recycling and garbage pick-up.
Results from monitoring wellsshowed that chloride levels inleachate continued to decline
from 2009 through 2012 after rising
at a troubling rate from 2005-
2008.
Five nearby private wells show
no effect from the landfill, the
report said. Three surface
water areas that are regularly
monitored also showed no effect of
the site.
The increased level of methane
gas in the area of the site attendant’strailer, first discovered in 2008,continues to be a concern requiring
increased monitoring, the report
said. “Site staff must measure
landfill gas concentrations in the
attendant’s trailer prior to entry
and while in the trailer,” the
report said.
All ignition sources should be
removed from the vicinity of the
trailer and from the landfill site, it
also stated.
