The Citizen, 2013-05-30, Page 14PAGE 14. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 30, 2013.Water levels fluctuate, flood fields with high rainWow! There were some areas thatreceived a lot of rain in a very shorttime on May 21. Brussels didn’thave it and here at home, we did not
have it, but just a couple miles
east/south – they got it. Travelling toSeaforth, there were plenty of fieldscovered in water and the creeks andrivers were running very high.
Amazingly, within a couple of days,
the water levels were almost normalagain in the creeks and the fieldsstarted to dry. The employees atParrish and Heimbecker in Walton
could not work around the
Walton/Seaforth area, but headed tothe west and north, where heavyrains were missed. It has been very cool this past
week and many nights there has
been frost. I thought I had covered
things nicely, but it seems I missed a
few plants. I hope the frost has not
harmed any of the trees coming out
into bud and flower. Hopefully the
warmer weather will come
back as predicted by the
weatherman.
The community yard sales around
town on Saturday sure had a cold
start to their day. According to many,
the consensus was there were not as
many sales or people around the
town. I heard of at least three other
towns having community sales on
Saturday so maybe that was a factor
or it was just too cold!
Congratulation to Geoff and
Michelle Dalton on the arrival of a
beautiful little girl to their family.
Emma Sophia arrived last week to
the delight of Brandon, Hannah and
Brady, to make the family even – two
boys, two girls! Congrats to Grandpa
Ken and Grandma Brenda Dalton.
Congratulations to great-
grandparents George and Pat
Langlois who are excited about the
arrival of a great-granddaughter.
Proud parents are Curtis and Jenna
Meyers who welcome their first
child, Kate Patricia. Excited
grandparents are Susan and Bill
Meyers.
I reported that Anne Ryan had
been under the weather and that it
turns out that was an understatement.
Anne was rushed to hospital with a
serious leaking brain aneurysm. She
was sent to London and underwent
emergency surgery. She has come
along very well and was expected
home this past weekend.
We hope Phyllis Mitchell is
coming along with her stay in
Seaforth Hospital.
We hope she is feeling better and
is soon home.
All in all, it’s just another stud in the wall
The Brussels Library expansion is starting to take shape with the foundation finished and the
frames of the walls popping up over the past two weeks. Huron East Council aims to have the
project done by the end of this construction season. (Denny Scott photo)
Boy with local ties recognized for heroic ski actions
There was quite a bit of traffic on
Sunday heading to the Walton
Raceway. There was a truck mudbog
held and there were many trucks
arrive to try out the course. It must
have been a great course, because I
saw a lot of very dirty trucks
heading home at the end of the
afternoon.
We all hope we raise our children
to do the right thing and Heather
(McGavin) and Bryan Kelso must be
very proud of their 10-year-old son.
The family lives in North Bay and
skiing is the winter pastime they
participate in regularly. On this
particular day, Jared Kelso and his
friend went skiing. They were in the
right place at the right time and
found a nine-year-old girl injured.
She had gone off the trail and hit a
tree. She had a concussion, broken
jaw and teeth and had lost a lot of
blood. Jared stayed with the injured
girl and tried to comfort her, while
his friend went for help. The two
boys were presented with awards
from the Canadian Ski Patrol
Association for their heroic efforts.
Congratulations to Jared.
There was a good turnout for the
community fireworks held at
Winthrop last weekend. Families all
donated a variety of fireworks and a
few volunteers from the Brussels
firefighters set them off safely. The
event was held at the Winthrop Ball
park.
A very special family get-together
was held on May 22 by the Van Veen
family. The six children of Marinus
and Aagje Van Veen gathered at the
home of Gerrit and Helen Van Veen
in Listowel to celebrate. It was 65
years ago on May 22, 1948 that the
family of eight left their homeland
of the Netherlands for an unknown
tomorrow in Canada. The children
are Gerrit, Alie, Piet, Clara, Martha
and Aggie( Ten Pas). They had
prepared for their journey for many
months and a special remembrance
was the children’s suitcases. They
had to leave all their furniture
behind, so as keepsakes and
practicality, the six drawers of an
oak cupboard were made into
suitcases by a local carpenter, one
for each of the children.
The family boarded the boat,
Tabinta, in Rotterdam to travel
across the sea to Canada. The boat
was a horrible boat. The men had to
stay at one end and the women at the
other end. There were no exceptions
or excuses to be found in the wrong
end of the boat. The boat made the
10 day trip to land in Quebec City on
June 1, 1948. The family then took
the train to Toronto and then
boarded another train to go to
Guelph. They were met by their
sponsor (which was mandatory to
immigrate to Canada), Mr. Mervin
Shantz of Alma. Mr. Van Veen had to
work for his sponsor for a year after
arriving in Canada. The family
developed a close bond with the
Shantz family and they all felt they
were very lucky to have had such a
wonderful sponsor. Not all families
had been so lucky. The
family moved to the Brussels area in
1954.
The family has remained very
close and has celebrated the
milestones of arriving and living in
Canada many times. They gathered
for this 65th anniversary at Gerrit
and Helen’s home and enjoyed a
coffee time first. Their daughter
Dianne and her daughter Leanne
served a delicious dinner for the
family at noon. Each family member
then took turns remembering events
of their trip 65 years ago. Aggie was
only seven years old when making
the trip and celebrated her eighth
birthday just 10 days after arriving
in Canada.
It is a wonderful story and
congratulations to the VanVeen
family on keeping their memories
alive and for honouring their parents
courage in bringing the family to
Canada.
