One night a nurse was making her
rounds in a nursing home. While
walking down the hall, she came
across an open door. She looked in
and saw Frank sitting on his bed
with a frown on his face. She asked
him what was bothering him. Frank
said that his passion in life was
driving a truck, but now that he was
stuck in this nursing home he had
lost his passion for living. The nurse
said to him, “why don’t you pretend
to drive in your truck?” Frank said
he had never thought of doing that.
The next day the nurse went by
Frank’s room and there he was
pretending to drive his truck.
Wanting to humour him, she asked,
“Frank, what are you doing?” He
replied, “I’m driving my truck to
Nova Scotia.” The nurse smiled at
him and carried on making her
rounds. The next night as she walked
by Frank’s room she saw the same
thing.
Again she asked Frank, “what are
you doing?” He replied, “I’m driving
my truck to Nova Scotia, don’t you
know, it’s a two-day trip?” The nurse
smiled at him and carried on making
her rounds. Walking down the hall,
she came across another open door
and looked in. She saw Bill
pretending to dance with someone.
She then asked Bill, “what are you
doing?” Bill replied, “I’m dancing
with Frank’s wife, he’s gone driving
in his truck to Nova Scotia for a
couple of days!”
Obviously Bill had overheard the
conversation the nurse had with
Frank. He heard Frank’s passion for
driving and it motivated him to think
about his passion. Sometimes when
we are looking for motivation to
begin a large project and don’t have
the energy, we need to find someone
that is passionate about something.
Listening to them will recharge our
batteries and give us the energy we
need to begin that large project.
Last year I was procrastinating
doing a large project out in my
backyard. The next day I received a
call from a woman (Joyce Steuernol)
about making bed mats for Haiti.
She asked me if our church could
help her with the mats she was
making for families in Haiti.
I asked her more about this project
and she told me. She told me that she
wanted to help young children in
Haiti by giving them a plastic bed
mat so that they don’t have to sleep
on the damp ground. It protects
them from dampness, biting insects
and the common 'paper cuts' from
leaves/reeds. There is a desperate
need for the homeless in Haiti since
the earthquake.
Also, the colourful outer bags used
to hold milk become quick-dry bed
mats for medical patients in Haiti.
By recycling a by-product of our
milk purchases, instead of
thoughtlessly tossing it in the
garbage, we can give a small
measure of comfort to hurting
people who would otherwise sleep
on the ground.
Not to mention that this project
also keeps those plastic bags out of
our landfills. Then she said, come
over to my place and I’ll show you
how they are done. A few days later,
I went over to Joyce’s home and I
was amazed to learn about her
system for cutting up the plastic milk
bags in one long strip so she could
start crocheting them into a long bed
mat for a child to sleep on. As I
watched her work, her face lit up like
a Christmas Tree. It was very slow
work and very detailed as I watched
her move the crochet needle back
and forth in a rhythm. While I was at
her place she would only get a very
small amount done on the mat
because it takes a long time to
complete. But none the less, Joyce
kept smiling through it all. She told
me what kept her going in this slow
and detailed work is thinking of a
child from Haiti lying down on this
plastic mat off the ground while it
slept comfortably. Before I left she
took out another mat that she had
completed. I couldn’t believe the
beautiful colours in this mat from all
the different coloured milk bags. It
looked so attractive. Then Joyce told
me that one single bed mat for a
child takes over 150-200 milk bags
and one adult bed mat takes about
250-300 milk bags. She also told me
that there is quite the demand for
these bed mats because they are
making them for more places around
