Moses.” (2Kings 18:6) Another
passage notes, “In everything that he
undertook in the service of God’s
temple and in obedience to the law
and the commands, he sought his God
and worked wholeheartedly.”
(2Chron. 31:21) We see there is not
only abiding by the limits of God’s
commands (like the fence around a
large ranch protecting from
predators); Hezekiah “sought his
God” and “held fast to the Lord” – a
deliberate, intentional, devoted
seeking to know God and please Him.
Through the prophet Jeremiah,
God promises focus and definition to
those who trust Him: “I will give
them singleness of heart and action,
so that they will always fear me for
their own good and the good of their
children after them.” (Jer 32:39)
Temptation woos us to lose
definition – to blur the lines perhaps,
and then to cross them (hence
misdeeds are called ‘trespasses’).
Resisting temptation is thus an
essential part of defining who we
are, what we will and will not do and
be known for. In the New Testament,
James counsels, “Resist the devil,
and he will flee from you. Come
near to God and He will come near
to you.” (Jas.4:7f)
Responding to the question, “How
can I resist temptation?” Graham
writes, “The first step you need to take
is to flee from whatever is tempting
you. Don’t play with it or toy with it in
your mind – get as far from it as
possible. I have known of people who
had to change jobs to keep away from
something (or someone) that was
tempting them to do wrong – but it was
the only way to win.
Paul told his young friend Timothy
to ‘flee the evil desires of youth, and
pursue righteousness, faith, love and
peace’ (2 Timothy 2:22)
