according to Hamilton-Seeger, she
did mention that some have special
significance.
Rogers Botanical Garden near
Carlow, for example, is a 42-year old
garden spanning two generations.
“The 10-acre garden is run by
James Rogers and was started by his
father in 1971,” she said. “It’s an
example of a pretty large site with a
lot of features.”
On the other end of the spectrum,
there are simple, low maintenance
gardens that show people what can
be done to simply beautify their
garden.
Another unique garden is Terrace
Hill, run by Percy Renner and
Joanne Bullen at 10 South Shore
Lane in Bayfield.
“It’s a beautiful spot underneath
the cedar trees,” Hamilton-Seeger
said. “It has ferns and a Japanese
garden and it’s a great experience for
people to have.”
Private gardens are one of the
mainstays of the tour, but it also
features commercial gardens and
public gardens as well.
One commercial garden that
Hamilton-Seeger said was a good
example is Brentwood on the Beach.
Part of the bed and breakfast of the
same name, the garden is maintained
by Joan and Peter Karstens and
located at 33937 Moore Street in
St. Joseph, located between
Bayfield and Grand Bend on
Highway 21.
“It’s a fantastic garden,” she said.
“It features Frank Moore sculptures
and is right on Lake Huron. It’s a
great place to visit.”
Willowpark Patch, owned and
operated by Debbie Kuyvahoven, is
a perfect example of a country
garden, according to Hamilton-
Seeger.
Located at 229 Arthur Street in
Wingham, the garden features a
patio, pond, paths and pergola.
“Willowpark is just fantastic,” she
said. “It’s a great garden to visit.”
Locally, Hamilton-Seeger has
opened her garden, called
Applegarth, and is joined by several
other gardeners.
Jacqui Laporte and John Empson
from Auburn have opened their
garden, called Escape from Chaos
and, just across the street, Karen
Redmond is sharing her unique
backyard garden, called Whimsical
Grass Gardens for the many
ornamental grasses at the location.
Davara Studio will be opening its
garden here in Blyth and two local
greenhouses, Sunset Springs and
Spring Breezes near Walton and
Auburn respectively, are showing
their collections.
Westinge Farm Flowers, run by
Gaye Datema at 83341 Currie Line
near Blyth will also be open for tours
and Donnybrook Flower Farm,
located outside of Auburn at 38441
Glen’s Hill Road will be open for
tours.
Local businesses featured include
Maple and Moose in Blyth and
Greyhaven Gardens in
Londesborough.
While this is the first year that the
tour has decided to switch to
individual hours or by appointment
tours, that style has been offered in
neighbouring Grey-Bruce for many
years.
While it could be difficult for
some to understand the desire to
open their houses for such a long
time to so many people, Hamilton-
Seeger said that it’s really a matter of
wanting to share.
“It’s a big deal for people to open
their home, whether it’s for certain
hours every week or by
appointment,” she said. “However,
we’re finding that people want to do
that and they want to share the
experience with other people.”
The idea has been well received by
local organizations, including
groups like the Auburn Horticultural
Society who are going to use the
map to plan tours together.
The group also lists several
different days when garden tours are
being held in the local area, many of
which feature gardens on their own
map.
Called “1 Day Garden Tours”, the
events are as follows:
• Stratford Annual Garden Tour

Tickets are available at the starting
location at City Hall and cost $15 for
