HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2013-05-02, Page 12PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2013. The County of Huron hascontinued to show its support oflandowner projects that protect and
improve water quality. The county
has announced 2013 funding of
$400,000 for the Huron County
Clean Water Project.
The county initiative has provided
grants to landowners for their water
protection projects since 2004.
Huron County Clean Water Project
may be one of the most successful
on-the-ground water quality
improvement ventures in Ontario.
The combination of county support
and contributions from other funders
and landowners has resulted in more
than 1,500 completed projects by
county residents. This work
has helped to keep Lake Huron
clean.
The County of Huron has
contributed $1.75 million since 2004
in support of projects to protect and
improve water quality. Each dollar
provided by the county has led to
more than three dollars of workcompleted through additionalcontributions by property owners
and complementary programs from
national, provincial, and local
sources. Landowners taking part
have completed work with a total
project value of more than $5.8
million. A project spokesperson says
that’s good for the environment and
the economy.
The county initiative has provided
financial incentives for projects such
as windbreak and tree planting,
upgraded wells, proper
decommissioning of old wells,
decommissioning of manure storage
sites and fencing cattle out of
streams. Other projects have
included wetland creation, diversion
of water from manure and exercise
yards, erosion control, stewardship
guide implementation, stormwater
management, fragile land
retirement, and community and
special projects. Huron County
residents are eligible for grants up to50 per cent of the cost of theireligible voluntary projects. This
funding has also been combined
with other cost–share programs,
when available. A local review
committee was established to
approve projects that are highest
priority.
Participating landowners, with
funding help from the county
project, have during the initiative’s
successful history:
• Fenced cattle out of almost 40
kilometres of streams
• Planted more than 150 hectares
of trees
• Established almost 90 kilometres
of windbreaks
The Huron County Clean Water
Project has also supported projects
by county residents to:
• Upgrade 289 private wells,
including faulty wells
• Decommission 360 unused wells
The Huron County Clean Water
Project has been funded by theCounty of Huron and delivered bythe Ausable Bayfield and Maitland
Valley Conservation Authorities.
“The County of Huron has shown
great leadership in helping county
residents complete projects to keep
the lake, rivers, and creeks clean,”
said Kate Monk, Supervisor of
Stewardship and Conservation
Lands. “If you have a project in
mind, please give Maitland Valley or
Ausable Bayfield a call to find outabout grant rates and projects thatare eligible for funding.” For

“Feed the Soil” is the theme of the
19th annual Compost Awareness
Week, May 5 to 11. The Compost
Council of Canada invites
Canadians to think about the
importance of giving back to the soil
that nourishes us.
From residential backyard
composting to large-scale public and
private facilities, organics recycling
is an important way to reclaim
valuable nutrients and return them to
the soil. “Compost Week is a
celebration of the possible,” says
Compost Council of Canada
Executive Director Susan Antler.
“We all generate organic waste
materials, but when we recycle them
through composting, we can return
them to the earth for future life.”
This year, the Compost Council is
highlighting two important research
developments. One is a study being
carried out by researcher Christine
Brown, Nutrient Management Field
Crop Lead for the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs (OMAFRA). Designed to
test the benefits of compost derived
from “green bin” collection of
household food waste, the study is
also focusing on the supply and
application logistics to help “Cities
Feed Farm Soil”. The Compost
Council is participating in this study
with the support of municipal green
bin compost producers along with
the Ontario Soil and Crop
Improvement Association and the
Canadian Fertilizer Institute.
Also, the Compost Council is
pleased to announce the release of
Environment Canada’s “Technical
Document on Municipal Solid
Waste Organics Processing”, a
