Hunger awareness event soon
THE EDITOR,
In a country as affluent as Canada,
hunger is unacceptable. Yet, close to
900,000 Canadians will visit a food
bank for assistance this month
alone. Of those, 38 per cent are
children or youth. Hunger is often a
hidden issue and we are working to
change that fact with Hunger
Awareness Week.
Here in Wingham and the
surrounding area, the need is
represented by a continuing rise in
those turning to us for support, with
508 adults and 452 children coming
to the Food Share in the first three
months of 2013. In addition the
Food Share has also had 31 new
families need assistance in the same
time period.
But we can change this statistic.
During Hunger Awareness Week,
May 6-10, we Canadians can “Give
It Up For Hunger” to become more
conscious of hunger and what it
feels like to go without food. We’re
asking Canadians to “Give It Up”
for Hunger on Wednesday, May 8,
by putting food out of reach, by
fasting for a day and challenging
themselves to give up breakfast,
lunch and dinner. In fact, we have
even challenged our government
officials to also “Give It Up” for
hunger – by fasting an entire day.
We then ask you to consider
donating the dollar value of your
“skipped meals” to the North Huron
Community Food Share.
For Hunger Awareness Week last
year, over 150 parliamentarians and
staff fasted to show their support of
the hundreds of thousands of
Canadians who struggle with
hunger. We hope that people will
share their experiences and thoughts
on this challenge by going to
www.hungerawarenessweek.ca
asking their politicians to join us in
fasting on May 8 and supporting us.
We can make a difference for the
over 135 families in the Wingham
and area, who turn to the Food Share
for support each month. By learning
about hunger and experiencing it
personally, we can all change the
way we think about hunger and
thereby activate the changes needed
to reduce it.
We encourage everyone to take
part. Visit hungerawarenessweek.ca
for more information. You won’t
regret it.
Gord Kaster, Chairman
North Huron Community Food
Share.

Sadie Chalmers of Blyth, a member of Mustangs Making
a Difference, a positive change group of students from
F.E. Madill Secondary School, was one of the many

To eat to the glory of God
(J.R. Miller)
“Whether therefore you eat or drink or whatever you do--do all to the glory of
God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
Nothing in life is left out--“whatever you do.” It extends even to eating and
drinking. We are to do all things to the glory of God. This means that we must do
everything in a way that will please Him.
To eat to the glory of God is to recognize Him as the Giver of our daily bread, to
seek His blessing on it, to eat according to the divine laws, eating to be ready for
the best service, and then to use all our strength in doing the work which God gives
us to do.
One who eats self-indulgently or gluttonously, or who eats food that is injurious to
his health, or who does not use the strength he derives from his food in living
obediently--is not glorifying God. In all our life, in everything we do, we are to
think of what will honour God.

one of the hymns sung in Cuba.
The children were asked to come
to the front for their story time.
Kaitlyn asked the children what
would being them joy? Some
answers were sunshine, a peanut
butter sandwich, birds singing and
when they said what makes them
joyful they drew a grape on the
grapevine. The vine had lots of
grapes and was soon filled.
Floyd Herman told a short history
of the anthem, Peace Like a River
