The folks at Melville PresbyterianChurch did their part to feed themultitude on Sunday at their annualdinner. Lots of conversation along with good food is always a winner and a nice way to spend a drizzly April afternoon. Spring cleaning of the vintage kind is certainly not my style, but the occasional rooting out of a drawer, or closet is fine with me on occasion. My treasure this spring was finding papers that I don’t recall saving. A stack of letters from my worst handwriting brother Clif from the1980s had me laughing out loudwith myself. In great detail he wasdescribing prenatal training for breathing and being Clif, his opinion of it. Then a postcard from 1969 to my Guelph St. Joseph’s nursing roommates from a nursing conference at the Royal York, Toronto was in my hand. This laugh was caused by my warning them that the rooms at this hotel were $23 a night. Oh my, my. So it was well worth my time to sort a shelf, even if the only one to appreciate it was me.And yes, I mailed the appropriatepapers to the correct people so theytoo could enjoy the time lapse. The farmers’ market folks are getting into the details for May 17 opening, it might be a good thing to consider as a way to advertise, sell and socialize plus support our community all at the same time. Sharing a booth might be an option. The Lions Club is once again busy in the community. A Leo Club is being promoted this week. Remember all the good things thatcame for the young people in Leosthe 1980s. It’s time again to showour support for the next residents of our area. At the very least see your favourite Lions member and buy your elimination ticket for the June event. One of the joys of grandchildren is By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY At the Branch Legion elects new executive at meeting By Jo-Ann McDonald The week began with the Brussels Legion Branch hosting and feeding the Brussels Lions’ Club. They had an ‘invite a guest’ evening and 52 diners were fed. They enjoyed a roast beef dinner served up by Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville, Deb Cann, Mary Bradshaw and Jo-Ann McDonald. The executive and general meetings for April were held on Tuesday evening. During the general meeting the elections were held. Elected to the following positions were: Past-President, Deb Cann; President, Jo-Ann McDonald; secretary, Sandra Josling; treasurer, Alicia McDonald; sergeant-at-arms, Lisa Glanville; executive, Andy Overholt, Mabel Glanville, Judy Lee, Eric Ross and John Lowe. Elections were closed with two vacant positions. The nominating committee will look for Comrades to fill the vacancies before the next meeting. The Thursday night darts had a dozen darters taking aim at the boards. Winners were: first, Roger McHardy and Kaye Smith; second, Marlene Rutledge and Wayne Smith; high, Daisy Schmidt, 126, Deb Cann, 125 and Wayne, 108. The final fun night is Thursday evening with snacks and prizes being awarded. The Brussels Ladies Slo-pitch league met on Thursday evening to discuss the upcoming year. A few rule changes, start date for the year and the tournament date were set. The Friday night supper of roast pork was enjoyed by over 35 folk. Friday’s supper will be roast beef. There is only one supper left before the ladies retire for the season to enjoy the summer. We are hoping other comrades would consider volunteering to do a meal sometime in the fall or winter. Consider it over the summer and let the Branch know. The Comrades were busy cooking at the fish fry in Londesborough on Saturday. The Lions Club of Londesborough is a strong group and sold tickets to 475 folks to support their activities. Comrades kept busy were George Adams. Lloyd and Mabel Glanville, Sharon Robbins, Deb Cann, Sandra and Catrina Josling, Judy Lee, Neil, Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald and friend Holly. Members of the Brussels Army Cadet Corp 2967 went to Camp Borden for the weekend. There were about 30 Cadets taking part in the many activities offered. They had a chance to participate in range practice, abseiling, survival techniques and lots more exciting activities. They left Friday evening and returned late Sunday afternoon. Anyone wishing to order pies needs to do so by Monday. Please leave orders on the answering machine at the Branch 519-887- 6562.
