THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 2013.Reduce emissions, be environmentally consciousNC –When you drive a vehiclethat burns fuel, such as gasoline ordiesel, the exhaust contains a com-plex mixture of gases. Many of these gases, such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, nitrogen oxides and more, can affect human health as well as the environment. It’s worth thinking about this every time we turn our vehicle’s ignition key.Tailpipe emissions can be classi-fied as Greenhouse Gases (GHG) orCriteria Air Contaminants (CAC). GHGs include carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), and methane (CH4). These emissions from light duty vehicles have recent- ly been regulated in Canada. CACs include carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sul-phur oxides (SOx), volatile organiccompounds (VOC), particulate mat-ter (PM), and ammonia (NH 3). Research shows that if each one of us adopted a few fuel-efficient driv- ing techniques, we could prevent more than a thousand kilograms of CO2 from entering the atmosphere while also saving hundreds of dol- lars annually in fuel costs.According to Natural ResourcesCanada, we can all help by:• Driving less and instead choos- ing to walk, cycle, use public transit, and carpool. • Adopting fuel-efficient driving habits, such as: accelerating gently, maintaining a steady speed, antici- pating traffic and coasting to decel- erate. • Reducing our speed. For exam- ple, going from 100 to 120 kilome- tres/hour (km/h) burns 20 per cent more fuel. • Maintaining proper tire pressure.Under-inflating tires by only eightpsi (56 kPa) takes 10,000 kilometresoff the lifespan of the tire and can reduce your vehicle’s fuel consump- tion by up to four per cent. • Avoiding idling. If you’re going to be stopped for more than 60 sec- onds – except in traffic – turn the engine off. The average vehicle wastes more than 250 millilitres of fuel for every 10 minutes it idles. More information on becoming fuel-conscious consumers is avail- able at www.vehicles.gc.ca Continued from page 14 the course of a snowy winter, so a power washing will help remove excess salt, sand or dirt and help the car run more smoothly. • Get the vehicle a tune-up. A tune-up, including an oil change, should be part of your pre-trip plan- ning. Make sure winter hasn’t caused any damage to the vehicle’s body and ask your mechanic to per- form a thorough inspection of the vehicle’s suspension and brakes. If any problems arise, address them before embarking on your road trip. • Subscribe to a roadside assis- tance program. Roadside assistance programs, whether it’s CAA or a program offered through your insur- ance company, provide a measure of security to road-trippers. Many road- side assistance programs provide variety of emergency assistance for members, including: • towing service if your vehicle cannot start or operate safely • battery service if your car’s bat- tery needs a jump • flat tire service if you get a flat tire and don’t have a spare or cannot change the tire yourself • fuel delivery service if your car runs out of gas • lockout service if you lock your keys in the car. These services can act as a safety net should an issue arise when you’re on the road and far away from home or far away from a service sta- tion. Keep your membership card in your wallet and store their customer service number in your cellular phone should you accidentally lose your membership card or lock it inside your car. • Invest in a road navigation sys- tem. A road navigation system can be your best friend, helping you find your way in places with which you are unfamiliar. Road navigation sys- tems can alert you to traffic condi- tions while providing directions and alternate routes. Some systems will even alert you to nearby filling sta- tions, lodging or restaurants. 2006 Ford Ranger XL -grey, 4L, V6, air, cruise, bucket seats, ext. cab, 4x4, 271,603 kms .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $5,995. 2006 VW Jetta TDI -grey, 1.9L, turbo diesel, loaded, 5 spd. standard, 4 dr., sunroof, 319,453 kms. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $10,995. 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT -silver, 3.8L, V6, DVD/TV, 7 pass., loaded, 194,380 kms . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $6,495. 2005 Ford Escape XLT -red, 3L, V6, loaded, 2WD, 189,706 kms. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $5,995. 2005 GMC Sierra SLE Z71 -black/silver, 5.3L, 4x4, ext. cab, loaded, new transmission with only 50,000 kms., 290,081 kms .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $8,995. 2004 Mazda 6 -green, 2.3L, loaded, 4 dr., cloth interior, 190,094 kms. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $4,795. 2003 Ford Taurus LX -red, 3L, V6, loaded, 4 dr., 201,714 kms. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $3,995. 2003 Ford F150 Lariat Super Crew -black, 5.4L, V8, loaded, 4x4, 4 dr., super crew, 232,450 kms .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $7,995. 2003 Dodge Dakota Sport -black, 3.9L, V6, club cab, 2WD, loaded, w/capper, 209,108 kms . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $3,995. 2003 Ford Escape XLT -white, 3L, V6, loaded, 4x4, leather, sunroof, 217,037 kms .. . . . . $5,495. 2003 Ford Escape XLT -red, 3L, V6, loaded, 4x4, leather, sunroof, 155,627 kms . . . . . . . $6,495. 2002 Oldsmobile Alero -maroon, 3.4 L, V6, loaded, 4 dr., 192,613 kms.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . $2,795. 2002 VW Jetta GLS -silver, 2L, 5 spd., loaded, 4 dr., 206,118 kms. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $4,995. 2002 Chev S10 LS -red, 4.3L, V6, loaded, crew cab, 4 dr., 4x4, 265,316 kms. . . . . . . . . . $5,995. 2002 GMC Sierra SLE Z71 -white, 5.3L, 4x4, ext. cab, loaded, 230,456 kms. . . . . . . . . . . $6,995. 2001 Saturn SL 1 -maroon, 4 cyl., loaded 4 dr., 187,395 kms. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $2,995. 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo -grey, 4.7L, V8, loaded, 4x4, sunroof, 227,975 kms.$4,495. 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo -white, 4L, loaded, 4x4, 223,383 kms. . . . . . . . . . . . $4,495. 2001 Ford F150 XLT -silver, 4.6L, V8, 2WD, 4 dr., loaded, 298,047 kms . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $3,495. 2000 VW Jetta GLS -silver, 2L, 5 spd., leather, loaded, 4 dr., new tires, sunroof, 225,808 kms. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $3,995. 1998 VW Jetta TDI -blue, 1.9L, turbo diesel, air, cruise, power locks, 5 spd. standard, 4 dr., 405,261 kms... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $4,995. 1998 GMC 1500 Sierra -green, V8, auto, ext. cab, short box, loaded, 2WD, 259,786 kms.$3,495. 1997 Chrysler Sebring -black, 2.5L, V6, leather int., 2 dr. loaded, convertible, 287,233 kms. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $2,995. 1984 Rampage -neon green, 4 cyl, auto, 169,950 kms.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $4,295. 519-524-9878 37117 Blyth Road, Goderich, ON Service all makes & models • Custom Exhaust Bending Doug & Jodie Ruston RR #3 Blyth (on the Westfield Rd.) 519-523-4356 Complete Mechanical Service Computerized Tune-Ups Tires - Mufflers - Brakes Vehicle Inspection Station DAN’S AUTO REPAIR It’s Spring tune-up time!
