THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2013.United Church hosts 33rd Songfest Londesborough United Church held a most enjoyable “Songfest”, its 33rd, on Sunday evening. Introduced by John Jewitt, the performers played to a full and appreciative audience. The Londesborough United Church senior choir began and ended the program. Their opening set included “Come Unto Me” and “Chariot’s Comin”. Their second set featured “Tender Lord, Precious Lord” and “United in Christ”. Church organist and choir director, Barb Bosman, accompanied the choir. Katie Dockstader of Goderich studies music at University of Western Ontario and also does Irish dancing. Her solos were accompanied by her mother, Louise. She offered “If God Be for Us”, a lesser known number from Handel’s Messiah, and “Laudate Dominum” by Mozart. Katie demonstrated her versatility and her vocal range in her second appearance by singing “Lord, Listen to Your Children Singing”, and “How Great Thou Art”. A group familiar to the Londesborough area and always enjoyed made a return appearance at Songfest, The Snell Family Singers, Rob, Bette, Bonnie and Barb. Among their numbers were “He’s Everything to Me”, “Turn Your Radio On” and an adaptation of Leonard Cohen’s, “Hallelujah”. Much appreciated by the audiencewas Peter Postill of the Holmesville/Varna/Middleton area. Accompanied, and apparently inspired by Barb Bosman, Peter sang familiar numbers including “Annie’s Song”,” ’Til There Was You” and “Danny Boy”. In 2003 a handful of singers in the Mitchell area who belonged to various church choirs came together wanting to sing other music. The choir now has 30-35 members. The group is conducted by Ed Havenga, a church organist and school teacher. Audrey Vorstenbosch, also a church organist, accompanies the choir. This choir performs two concerts a year, one at Christmas and another in the spring. Londesborough had a wonderful preview of their upcoming concert on May 5. That concert will feature songs about music, the world’s universal language. Two of the numbers they sang at Songfest were “Music Speaks” and “The Music Is Always There [In Your Heart]” by John Rutter. In addition, Ed soloed on the Londesborough organ playing an arrangement of “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow”. The applause was warm and much deserved for this group. By Ben Stewart Hey everyone, welcome to spring! Spring at Hullett Central Public School means construction. There is a new kindergarten classroom being built and many upgrades are planned for our school. Things will be very different next September for sure. This week the Grade 5/6 students are studying space. They are learning about Earth and other planets. The Grade 6 class is learning about European settlers. In the Grade 2/3 class students are working on procedural writing. The Grade 2 students had a social studies test. All Grade 2/3 students thought long and hard about the Peace Tree we will be painting on the gym wall at school. That’s all for this week I hope you enjoy this spring.
